Asbestos in the Water Supply??
Article by Michael Enfield
Americans are fortunate enough to have ready supplies of relatively clean water. However, even though our water may be treated with special chemicals to get rid of bacteria, fecal matter, and other contaminants, recent studies have found that the water supply can still become tainted before it gets to your house. One major concern is asbestos contamination.
Once, asbestos was used in everything from construction to automotive industries due to its ability to insulate against a number of different things. Asbestos can resist heat, electricity, chemicals, and flame, making it very appealing for insulation. It is also very strong and flexible, which makes it easy to add asbestos to a variety of products, such as roofing tiles and brake pads.
Asbestos is not a problem until it becomes friable, or able to get broken down into microscopic particles. As asbestos-containing products age, they can release the fibers into the environment. From here, people can inhale or ingest the fibers, which can become lodged in their bodies. Frighteningly, asbestos is recognized as a human carcinogen.
One item that often called for asbestos fibers was the cement used to build water mains. These large pipes contained asbestos as a way to add durability. However, as the water mains age, the microscopic asbestos particles can be swept along into the previously potable water. Frustratingly, most asbestos fibers in the water are unnoticeable to the naked eye.
If you drink water that is contaminated with asbestos, these fibers can become stuck throughout your gastrointestinal system. Because the body cannot break down the particles, they can later turn into cancerous tumors. Besides mesothelioma and lung cancer, other cancers associated with asbestos exposure include:
Stomach Intestines Colorectal Kidney Throat Esophagus Gallbladder
If you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos, it is important to understand the associated risks. For more information, please visit the Mesothelioma Resource Center today.
