Insurance Plans for Securing the Travel of Old Age Pensioners ...

It is a standard incline by old folks today to travel to distant places when they have started the retirement life. They do not have to fret about the rigidity of work or some other tensions that was encountered while on a job. However , the necessity of travel insurance for seniors would help the individuals to go to distant places and cope with any unforeseen events that will happen. Many of these policies are more costly than the standard insurance because of the coverage and security offered to the beneficiary.

It is quite troubling to go searching for insurance when folk opt to move on to distant places. Although it is sort of dear and tricky to have such a policy, there are a few factors due to which they cannot be avoided. It is kind of vital to get ready for all the sudden incidents that might turn back while on travel. There is a bigger risk for having a medical emergency when the seniors make a journey to distant places. Therefore it is completely compulsory to buy travel insurance for seniors deciding to go. Assurance is obtained when the right policy package is obtained in order that it suits your age group.

The major factor that is considered while on a voyage abroad by seniors would be the protection from financial burdens caused due to sudden injury or illness. Whenever the need of such travel insurance for seniors comes into picture, they should contact the best insurance firm and search out the services. These providers should keep up their promise of better services discussed in their quotes. Nowadays most of the firms appear to comprehend the signification of these policies when they discover the possibilities of folk in that age group. The voyager should also get the details regarding the place which they are planning to visit.

It is a common belief that finding travel insurance for the individuals who are above the age of sixty-five would be regularly not possible. This is not true in the majority of the cases. Introduction of various corporations that cope with premium policies would provide better security and boosted services which the senior people deserve. The necessity for such coverage becomes quite exaggerated in events of loss or medical emergency. The environment in which we live is mostly susceptible to terrorist attacks. There are a few foreign insurance programs which provide better defense against the various events. The individuals also should review the exceptions and restrictions that might be included.

The folks that search for such insurance programmes should refer to various internet sites which provide that reviews pertaining to those. Folk should also keep a note of the numerous service groups that may come to the aid of the person in periods of emergency. The individuals have to read the whole review punctiliously so that they can be aware of the insurance coverage against different restrictions, cancellations, missing the flight for example. Pensioners should carry all the obligatory documents for filing the complaint. Proper authorities could be made contact with in eventualities where the service of such insurers or service groups.

Instant view: Q2 growth tepid; Q1 revised down sharply (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The U.S. economy grew less than expected in the second quarter as consumer spending barely rose amid higher gasoline prices, and growth braked sharply in the prior quarter, a government report showed on Friday.

COMMENTS:

DAVID SEMMENS, U.S. ECONOMIST, STANDARD CHARTERED, NEW YORK

"There is absolutely no good news in this report and one would really hope that it will focus the minds of those in Washington on resolving the debt ceiling issue as soon as possible."

DOUGLAS BORTHWICK, MANAGING DIRECTOR, FAROS TRADING, STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT

"Today's disappointing U.S. GDP data confirms what we have suspected for some time: the end of QE2 will be do to the U.S. economy what a lawnmower does to green shoots. With QE2 now ended and government spending in check given the ongoing debt negotiations, we reiterate our view that the U.S.'s light at the end of the tunnel lies in having a weaker dollar, at least until exports can recover and the U.S. fiscal position can be put back on track."

CHRIS LOWE, CHIEF ECONOMIST, FTN FINANCIAL, NEW YORK

"What is worrisome is that each month in the quarter was weaker than the month before. We are looking at another slow quarter in the third quarter but still positive so no recession....At this point growth is so close to zero and confidence is more important than it normally is and the distraction of the debt ceiling fight could make a big difference. A government shutdown would have a big impact as well."

JOHN KILDUFF, PARTNER AT AGAIN CAPITAL LLC IN NEW YORK

"The slowdown in second quarter economic activity has been confirmed, and the reading will add to concerns about the remainder of the year.

"While there was a bright spot in the GDP report related to business activity, the inflation and government components were highly negative. This diminishes the economic outlook and will weigh on the demand outlook for energy and prices."

GENE MCGILLIAN, ANALYST, TRADITION ENERGY IN STAMFORD, CONNECTICUT

"I think that with GDP, we were we were looking for a little higher rates. I think it's a little disappointing, so the (oil) market is coming under pressure. I think some of the pressure in the market was already in there because of worries about the debt ceiling and some worries about a possible downgrade of Spanish debt.

"The (oil) market has been trying to expand to the bottom area of the trading band for the last few days. Whether or not we're going to see any kind of a free fall I think remains to be seen but it looks like the market is under pressure.

"The key point is going to be $95 a barrel, if we get down around those areas because that's where we've basically held for the last couple of weeks.

"The smaller growth is not a positive sign and the oil markets are reflecting that with the 50 cent sell off we just saw."

TOM BENTZ, DIRECTOR, BNP PARIBAS COMMODITY FUTURES INC IN NEW YORK

"Markets have been under pressure last few days as the U.S. debt talks stall, technically weak. More bad news for the markets, the GDP number missed estimates. Petroleum and equities extended their losses.

"Oil markets are watching Tropical Storm Don but it is not expected to be a major weather event, missing most petroleum infrastructure."

TIM GHRISKEY, CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER OF SOLARIS ASSET MANAGEMENT IN BEDFORD HILLS, NEW YORK:

"Everybody expected GDP to be weak for the second quarter, estimates had steadily come down, but this is a pretty shockingly low number. The revision to the first quarter is even more shocking."

"Clearly this is evidence of a mid-cycle slowdown. The only question now is do we see a pick up in the second half and so far the economic data to date doesn't suggest that."

"You might have some analysts come out and talk recession, talk about a double dip. Right now none of the forecasts even come close to that but this is weak data"

SCOTT BROWN, CHIEF ECONOMIST, RAYMOND JAMES, ST. PETERSBURG, FL

"The face value is certainly not great. The second quarter disappointed, but the first-quarter downward revision is more disturbing. It advances the pangs of concern. The debt ceiling nonsense is not going to help us. We're already in an economy that is subpar."

"Glancing through it doesn't look like anything is really out of line with what people were expecting for the second quarter... Gasoline price increasing from $3 to $4, that really slapped the consumer back considerably."

STEVE BLITZ, DIRECTOR AND SENIOR ECONOMIST, ITG NEW YORK

"The economy is weak, and it's going to stay weak, and it's going to stay weak for a while because we are in the process of deleveraging and this is what deleveraging looks like. To get the economy moving forward the way it should requires a reform of the tax code that will lower rates and broaden the base and favor investment over consumption. Efforts to try and put Humpty Dumpty back together again to have the economy we had before is not going to work.

"I'm not going to say there can't be any growth in the second half of the year. Remember the fiscal stimulus has petered out. You don't have the Fed's QE2 pushing liquidity into the system and you have slower growth globally. It's hard to add these things up and say that the U.S. economy is going to accelerate in the second half of the year."

OMER ESINER, CHIEF MARKET ANALYST, COMMONWEALTH FOREIGN EXCHANGE, WASHINGTON

"Very weak number in GDP. The headline was well below forecast and surprisingly we saw very large downward revision to Q1's data. So it looks like a lot of this was driven by a sharp falloff in consumer spending in the second quarter, which only rose by 0.1 percent. Overall, a very weak number. The dollar is kind of choppy at this moment. It appears to be holding steady against the euro and coming off against the yen. We've seen yields in the U.S. fall pretty dramatically. We're seeing a little bit of flight to safety and that might ironically provide a little bit support for the dollar."

MATTHEW KEATOR, PARTNER IN THE KEATOR GROUP, A WEALTH MANAGEMENT FIRM IN LENOX, MASSACHUSETTS

"Disappointing number, but I'm not surprised considering the uncertainty in the market over the debt ceiling, regulations and so forth. Structurally, corporations are doing a good job, but on the macro side, with all the uncertainty, it isn't surprising that we're seeing this type of headwind. This is the straw with all the other uncertainty out there."

DAVID SLOAN, ECONOMIST, IFR ECONOMICS, A UNIT OF THOMSON REUTERS

"The advance estimate of Q2 GDP of 1.3% annualized falls short of a 1.8% market consensus, and with Q1 revised down sharply to a meager 0.4% increase from 1.9%, and more negative revisions further back, the picture is of a recovery that has lost momentum after a promising spell in late 2009 and early 2010. Yr/yr GDP has slowed to 1.6% in Q2 from 3.5% in Q3 2010. The main reason for the Q2 disappointment was that consumer spending (which is 70% of GDP) managed only a 0.1% increase, some of the weakness there temporary due to supply shortages in autos but even excluding autos underlying demand looks weak. Within the consumer spending breakdown durable goods fell by 4.4% but the rise in non-durables was only 0.1% and services rose by only 0.8%, the latter broadly consistent with real disposable income, which rose by 0.7% for a second straight quarter, restrained by rising energy prices. The savings rate edged up to 5.1% from 4.9%, but with Q1 revised down from 5.1%, was unchanged net of revisions."

Regulators shut banks in Ind, Va, SC; 61 in 2011

(AP) ? Regulators on Friday shut down a trio of banks in Indiana, Virginia and South Carolina, boosting to 61 the number of U.S. bank failures this year.

The pace of closures has slowed, however, as the economy has stabilized and banks work their way through the bad debt accumulated in the Great Recession. By this time last year, regulators had shuttered 108 banks.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. seized the three banks, the largest by far being Integra Bank, based in Evansville, Ind., with 52 branches, $2.2 billion in assets and $1.9 billion in deposits.

Integra Bank received $83.6 million in taxpayer funds in February 2009 under the government's financial bailout program, Treasury Department data show. The funds have not been repaid, according to the Treasury data.

The bank recently had been trying to raise fresh capital and sell non-essential assets as it struggled under the weight of souring loans for commercial real estate and land development.

Also shuttered were Virginia Business Bank, with one branch in Richmond, Va., $95.8 million in assets and $85 million in deposits, and BankMeridian, based in Columbia, S.C., with three branches, $239.8 million in assets and $215.5 million in deposits.

Old National Bank, also based in Evansville, agreed to assume the assets and deposits of Integra Bank. In addition, the FDIC and Old National Bank agreed to share losses on $1.2 billion of Integra Bank's loans and other assets.

Xenith Bank, based in Richmond, agreed to assume the assets and deposits of Virginia Business Bank. South Carolina Bank and Trust, based in Orangeburg, S.C., is acquiring the assets and deposits of BankMeridian.

Also, the FDIC and South Carolina Bank and Trust agreed to share losses on $179 million of BankMeridian's assets.

Integra Bank's failure is expected to cost the deposit insurance fund $170.7 million. The failure of Virginia Business Bank is expected to cost $17.3 million. That of BankMeridian is expected to cost $65.4 million.

The pace of bank failures has slowed this year as lenders work their way through piles of bad debt. A slow but improving U.S. economy also has helped stem the number of bank casualties.

In all of 2010 regulators seized 157 banks, the most in a year since the savings-and-loan crisis two decades ago. The FDIC has said 2010 likely marked the peak for bank failures from the Great Recession.

There were 140 bank failures in 2009, costing the insurance fund about $36 billion. The failures last year cost around $21 billion, a lower price tag because the banks involved were smaller on average. Twenty-five banks failed in 2008, the year the financial crisis struck with force; only three were closed in 2007.

From 2008 through 2010, bank failures cost the fund $76.8 billion. The deposit insurance fund fell into the red in 2009. With failures slowing, the FDIC's deficit narrowed in the first quarter of this year; it stood at about $1 billion as of March 31.

Depositors' money ? insured up to $250,000 per account ? is not at risk, with the FDIC backed by the government. That insurance cap was made permanent in the financial overhaul law enacted last July.

Ski Resort Careers

If you are like most people, you have probably never considered taking a job at a ski resort. At first glance, ski resorts may not seem to offer a great deal of career options, but upon closer inspection you must just find the job you have always dreamed about. resorts offer a plethora of full-time, ladder-climbing type careers. So many professional opportunities are offered at ski lodges that there are quite a few well-paid residents who reside near the resorts all year long. Generally speaking, there are three types of jobs: full-time year-round, full-time seasonal and seasonal.

The reason you may not have thought of a ski resort as being a viable place to begin a career is that most employees on resorts are of the seasonal sort. Usually, these are young people who have just graduated from college and are experimenting a bit in the job field before settling down into their careers. Sometimes seasonal employees are taking time away from school or simply waiting out the time they have between achieving a bachelor's degree and beginning their master's study. Seasonal jobs are not the kind of job anyone wants to have forever, but they are okay for young people who are getting a start in the hospitality industry or who simply require a little bit of something to put on their resume.

Seasonal jobs are great for those wanting to break into the industry. Anyone who has spent the last decade or so at a job they did not especially enjoy may find that once they have moved to ski resort towns to begin a new career, seasonal jobs are the easiest to obtain.

Full-time seasonal jobs are available as well. These tend to pop up during the ski season, but there are also some jobs which may make themselves available during the summertime. Examples of these ski season positions include ski patrols, ski school managers and mountain guides. Those resorts which host guests for summer vacations will have a number of summer seasonal openings, such as fishing and river guides or mountain climbing guides. Such openings can also be found in national parks, which attract a number of college students as well. Some employees are lucky enough to be brought on for both winter and summer positions, though they are likely to be different positions during each respective season.

The final job category is the most coveted: ski resort jobs which have blossomed into full-time careers. Management is made up of a full-time staff, including marketing professionals, human resource managers, office staff members and department heads. One with enough hospitality experience can always submit themselves for such openings, but without experience it is a good idea to take a seasonal job first. Even taking a job as a secretary can be beneficial at ski resorts; there is always room to grow as well as new things to learn about the business. And there are quite a few resort spots who prefer to hire from within, this way employees who understand the inner workings of the hotel will go on to inspire further excellence.

Travelers Vulnerable to Hacking of Information ... - Travel + Leisure

07.27.11

Passport Blog, BBC Travel |? Frequent travellers rely on mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices to stay in touch and take care of business on the road, away from the safety and security of their offices. But reliance on these personal devices potentially exposes sensitive corporate or personal information to the world.

In light of the voicemail hacking scandal stewing in the United Kingdom this summer, have you ever wondered how easy it might be for someone to hack in to your mobile phone voice mail?

Turns out it?s frighteningly easy. In many cases, all a perpetrator needs is your mobile phone number and a cheap or free ?spoofing? service widely available online. (Just google ?caller ID spoofing? to learn specifics.)

Benefits of Aromatherapy ? Beauty, Health and Fitness

Aromatherapy effectively strengthens the immune systems resistance to disease and is especially helpful to cure some of the illness related to women, PMS and menopausal distress, being one of them. The massage and the aromatherapy can revitalise, soothe and uplift the body and soul encouraging an optimistic approach towards life. Most of the essential oils are therapeutic and therefore used only under the direction of a consultant.

The essential oils are absorbed by the body in two main ways, either massaged on the skin or inhaled. When inhaled, the nerve cells of the nasal cavity are activated, stimulating the brain and relaxing the body. The oils that are massaged enter the bloodstream and thereby efficiently cure body and soul of its ailments.
Some of the effective oils and their uses are listed as follows.
1.?? ?Frankincense: For relaxing the mind and inducing a peaceful sleep.
2.?? ?Eucalyptus: For curing the congestion in nose and throat during colds and flu.
3.?? ?Lavender: Relaxes and soothes the mind and body.
4.?? ?Geranium: For PMS and other related issues of the women.
5.?? ?Lemongrass: For treating sore and injured muscle.
6.?? ?Sandalwood: Used for curing digestion ailments.
7.?? ?Peppermint: For instant energy.
8.?? ?Tea Tree: This oil is a strong disinfectant and has anti-bacterial properties.

When choosing aromatherapy one must always remember that it?s a complimentary therapy and should not be used as the major treatment. It is an addition to aid in the healing process. Another thing that should be kept in mind is the usage of these essential oils. Since these oils are highly concentrated extracts, they should be only used under the guidance of a consultant or an experienced therapist. While the oils are beneficial in most ways, some can be detrimental to the body. Excessive use can lead to serious allergies and conditions.
The essential oils act as wonders especially for small burns or bruises. Home-made therapies like adding essential oils (lavender) can soothe and relieve stress. You can even add marjoram and lemon oils in a diffuser for a stress free sleep.

How I Managed To Find Console Game Testing Work | Central Florida ...

When I tell my friends that I make my living testing console games I can tell they are jealous. And the fact that I earn more than most of these people doing something that I love often seems to make things worse. They see it as very unfair that I should be getting paid to play games all day while they slog their guts out. What they fail to realise is that I also work very hard. They also fail to appreciate that they too could have decided to get into this business; most of my friends are gamers or at least they used to be.

?

How I Ended Up As A Game Tester

?

I left school at sixteen with poor qualifications. I found it hard to secure work and because I had nothing else to do I started to play games all the time. I started getting involved with a gaming forum and it was there that I first heard about game testing; it sounded fantastic. But when I realised that I needed to be skilled at writing I was a bit disappointed. Although writing was not something I was particularly skilled at, I wasn?t about to let that get in my way. Developing my writing skills became a passion and I was also finding out as much as possible about game testing.

I first found game testing work with an online game testing community. When I think back to what I was paid then, it was very poor compared to what I earn now but it was still very important as it gave me the experience I needed and it allowed me to network. I did this for about a year and after that I was able to get some jobs freelancing where the pay was much better. I?ve never looked back and my salary increases every few months and I?m turning projects down almost every day.

?

If you happen to have fun playing Ps3 then you?ve surely heard of ps3 break. Other relevant Ps3 gadgets that avid gamers will be considering include the ps3 key and the ps3 yes.

Forced labor trial begins for two Hawaii farmers (Reuters)

HONOLULU (Reuters) ? Jury selection began on Wednesday in the trial of two Hawaii farmers charged with conspiring to coerce at least 30 impoverished Thai nationals into forced labor under the guise of a guest worker program.

Alec and Mike Sou, who run Aloun Farms on the island of Oahu and specialize in growing produce, face a federal trial in Honolulu that is expected to last until Labor Day.

Chief U.S. District Judge Susan Oki Mollway is presiding over the case, after previously rejecting a plea deal that broke down in negotiations between the Sous and prosecutors.

The Sou brothers each face a dozen charges, including forced labor conspiracy, forced labor, visa fraud conspiracy and obstructing or impeding an official proceeding.

A 2010 indictment accuses the Sou brothers of holding about 30 Thai nationals "in a condition of forced labor" between September 2004 and early 2005.

The Sou family immigrated to Hawaii decades ago from Laos, from a refugee camp on the border with Thailand.

Thomas Otake, an attorney for Mike Sou, said his client is eager to "tell his side of the story" at trial.

"These false allegations have been devastating to his life and family," Otake said.

The laborers, who were impoverished rural farmers from Thailand, were recruited under the U.S. Department of Labor's seasonal and agricultural worker program, known as the H-2A program, the indictment states.

But, in violation of the terms of the federal program, the Sou brothers forced the workers to pay their airfare to Hawaii and to pay for substandard housing, the indictment states.

Due to all the deductions, and the high interest loans they took for the recruitment fees in a scheme that allegedly involved the Sou brothers, workers were left with "minimal pay," the indictment states.

To add to the workers plight, several of them were kept in mobile storage containers without air conditioning or indoor plumbing, according to the indictment.

Melissa Vincenty, an attorney representing the Thai workers, said the Sou brothers brought over 44 Thai workers, but that authorities did not find the treatment of 10 of those workers to be criminal.

A third defendant, labor recruiter William Khoo of Thailand, is accused of helping to recruit the workers, but he remains at large, Vincenty said.

Amy Winehouse: 'I'll be dead in a ditch, on fire' (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) ? When the news of Amy Winehouse's death hit, I couldn't help but thinking of how she'd told me that, in 10 years, she'd be "dead in a ditch, on fire."

It's important to emphasize that this was a joke, not a prophecy. It's hard to know whether she was really self-aware enough to be as worried about her own fate as everyone else would soon become.

She was one of the toughest nuts I've ever tried to crack. I eventually came up with plenty of quotable material, but it took hours of interviews over two frustrating days, filled with awkward silences, to come up with those quotes.

People asked later if I thought she was on drugs. But I suspect the problem I was having with Winehouse wasn't that she was under the influence. It was that she wasn't. And momentary sobriety is not the most comfortable place to encounter an addict.

When I first met Winehouse (after being stood up several times), it was in the dressing room at "The Tonight Show," as she had her hair done -- which, as you can imagine, was a finely tuned process. When I got to asking about the personal nature of the songs on her stunning second album, "Back to Black," we found ourselves at a kind of loggerheads.

"When I went into this album, I just felt really sad," she told me. "I felt really bad. I was clinically depressed, and I put it into music. And that was me at that time. When those things..." She paused and thought better of going any further. "Sorry, I'm really s---ty at interviews. I'm not great at talking about...I just think...the songs are enough."

There were eventually enough profound pauses that I meekly asked if she would be okay answering just a few more questions. She suddenly seemed to feel sympathy for my plight. "Not at all! I mean, I'm just saying, I'm sorry. Ask whatever you want; be as long as you want. I'm just not the best at...Yeah, I'm not very good at talking about stuff. But let's keep trying!"

Right then, I found her endearing, her inability to be "on" notwithstanding.

The next day, I tried again, first in the green room at a radio station before she did a truly awkward on-air interview, then in a long limo ride to LAX that I prayed would end to put both of us out of our misery. There were moments where a light went on in her eyes and she seemed empathetic, smart, witty, and engaged. Then a wind would extinguish that candle again. Was she shy? Bored by my questions? Made dull by lack of drink? What could I say or do to make the light stay on?

I asked her about the origin of "Rehab," which producer Mark Ronson encouraged her to turn into a song after a stray sung remark.

"We were walking down the street, on our way out to the pool hall, and I sang out of nowhere, like a joke," she said. "And Mark was like, 'Who's that?' I said, 'It's no one, I just made it up.' He's like, you should do that as a song, it's funny. And I was like, it's true."

We talked about her then-new engagement to the on-again, off-again love of her life, Blake Fielder-Civil, the subject of much of the obsessive "Back to Black" album and a fellow addict who would soon be widely seen as a destructive force in her life. At times, she perked up and we seemed to be connecting.

I asked: Do you feel like you're a true romantic, or is there a cynicism that keeps you from being the ultimate romantic?

Her reply: "No, I'm a very romantic person. I'm romantic about everything."

Q: I think people think of you as being...

A: "A miserable, cynical person."

Q: No, not that. Some of the songs describe obsessive love, and people hear that and want to believe that's real, and that at the peak of experience, you're really that obsessive about love and who you're with.

A: "Yeah. If you don't throw yourself into something, you'll never know what you could have had."

Q: You've called your makeup "the warpaint." And there's the beehive. Do you have good hive days and bad hive days?

A: "Never. Never. My hair is always on point, even if the rest of me is really naff."

Q: When you were at ("The Tonight Show") yesterday, one of your stylists was trying to get you to go out for a night of drinking...

A: "I don't have a drinking problem. I just didn't feel like drinking. I only had one drink last night. I was drinking Shirley Temples, and then I had a Jack and Coke. But that was it."

Q: You've said you admire Dean Martin. He got to the point where people expected a certain image, so when he wasn't drinking, he had to have colored water in his glass.

A: "No, it was the opposite -- the other way around. He started out with colored water, and then in the end he did start drinking like that."

Q: Do you ever feel like you'll let people down if they expect this raconteur who's wild and you don't deliver?

A: "No. If someone goes 'Amy, let me buy you tequila,' and I'm like 'No, no, I'm not drinking,' if they ask why, I always say that I'm on antibiotics. Because I'm ashamed to just go, 'You know, I'm just not drinking.' I have to say that I'm on a course of medication, because I feel ashamed (about abstaining)."

Q: The label went with another single before "Rehab," and I wondered if it's because they were nervous because Americans are conflicted with our attitudes about consumption.

A: "I don't know. Everyone knows that there's certain things that aren't good for you, but there's a fine line between enjoying yourself and being completely healthy. Or do you know what I mean? You can only be healthy to a point, where you're not having fun anymore. Does that make sense?"

Q: With the first album ("Frank"), you said you were in a defensive mode when you wrote that, more so than the second album ("Back to Black"). The second album, you wanted to write about consuming love and not be in that defensive posture. Do I have that right?

A: "Yeah, it's a lot less defensive. And it's very all or nothing. When I did the first album, I was smoking loads of weed, and I had that whole mentality of 'you don't know me, I don't need you, you don't love me, fuck you.' And when I wrote the second album, I was listening to a lot of pure '60s music, a lot of jukebox stuff -- and I was drinking a lot, which is a lot more of a depressive substance than weed.

"So my mentality flipped from 'Yeah, I don't need you, I'm gonna smoke a joint, I don't care' to listening to the jukebox and (sadly) standing with a drink."

Q: When your first album came out, someone asked where you'd be 10 years from now, and you said...

A: "Dead. Dead in a ditch, on fire."

Q: No, no. At that time, you said you imagined yourself in 10 years being a happy housewife with three kids. But some time has gone by since then, so you'd have to do some work to catch up with that now.

A: Is that a proposition?

Now, that was a funny line.

I wanted more lines like that -- partly because, as a journalist, I wanted my subject to perform for me. But more than that, as a fan, I just wanted to see an Amy Winehouse who was as self-aware and sharp and creative as the one I'd heard on two utterly brilliant albums.

I wanted to believe that she could be half as great in life as she was on record. I kind of sensed that I wanted her to believe it, too.

We emerged from the limo at the airport, and she headed into the terminal, too excited about catching a flight to meet her beloved Blake to worry about niceties like saying goodbye. I stood on the curb trying to hail a taxi, wondering what to make of the lost-seeming savant I'd just encountered.

Once the stereotype emerged of Winehouse as a stumbling, slurring lush who couldn't make it through a show without being mocked around the world, detractors began to propose that the greatness of "Back to Black" belonged to savvy producer/co-writers, not her.

The cure for that is to go back to her first album, "Frank," which is even more clever than its Grammy-winning follow-up smash, if less emotionally devastating.

Listen to "F--- Me Pumps," a hilarious spoof of a certain kind of working-class, man-hungry English female.

Someone who could satirize others as brilliantly as that never should have become so easily parodiable herself. And the devastation in her songs should never have become increasingly self-fulfilling schtick. We've lost a great artist, not a caricature.

Black was definitely her color. But here's hoping her final moments were a fade to white. http://www.thewrap.com/media/column-post/amy-winehouse-black-became-her-29392?page=0,0

Technical writers and public speaking ? ffeathers ? a technical ...

Technical writers and public speaking?? a match made in heaven? We have the knowledge about and passion for our field. We can safely put one word after another without causing mayhem. But can we stand up and speak in front of a crowd? More importantly, what would we do when confronted by a chandelier?

To find out whether you can do it or not, try Scott Berkun?s book, Confessions of a public speaker. I?ve just finished reading the book, with great enjoyment and plentiful note taking.

Technical communicators who do it already

Anne Gentle, Janet Swisher, Tony Self, Rhonda Bracey, Char James-Tanny, Tom Johnson, Sue Heim, Joe Welinske, Ellis Pratt, and many more. All excellent speakers and presenters. Perhaps most people reading this post have a public-speaking story to tell, either of horror or of triumph. :)

Until two years ago, you could have blown me down with a feather duster if you?d told told me that I would speak at a conference. Then I met Joe Welinske and started blabbing about my love of documentation wikis. There was probably a lot of arm waving and even a bit of in-place leaping about. Joe quickly suggested that I speak at the next WritersUA conference. I remember silence. I probably went pale. But I must have said yes, because within a few months I found myself on stage. To my absolute astonishment, my presentation went reasonably well. Since then I?ve presented sessions at a few conferences, and I enjoy the experience more each time.

At work, our team has decided to investigate public speaking as a way of sharing our experiences with others and of learning from others too. I tweeted about this during a #tcchat on Twitter, and Andrew Frayling recommended the book, Confessions of a public speaker, by Scott Berkun. Andrew is right. It?s good.

The terrors of public speaking

"Confessions of a public speaker" by Scott Berkun

One of the very first things I learned from Scott?s book is that fear of public speaking is a good thing. It?s your body?s way of preparing for a challenge. Without it, how would you cope when ?a legion of escaped half-lion, half-ninja warriors fall through the ceiling and surround you, with the sole mission of converting your fine flesh into thin sandwich-ready slices?? (Page 16.)

Now, that may sound a bit of a stretch. But think again. Towards the end of the book is a set of stories of the situations some hapless speakers have faced. Dan Roam was on stage in Moscow when ?six balaclava-hooded and heavily armed OMON troops (Moscow equivalent of a SWAT team)? burst in, grabbed an audience member and marched out again. (Page 184.) That story makes the average tech comm conference seem a little quiet.

It is strangely comforting to read a list of things that have gone wrong for other speakers!

Another of the stories, called ?Watch your slides?, is told by Gerv Markham. His laptop with slides, and all his other luggage, was stolen in a subway station when he was on his way to give a presentation. Since then, Gerv always takes a cab.

Gerv?s experience reminded me of what happened just before my very first presentation ever. It was also my very first trip to the United States. I took a cab from the hotel, and unwisely let the cab driver put my laptop bag in the trunk with the rest of my luggage. When we arrived at our destination, the driver jumped out, grabbed my bags before I could get to them, perched the laptop bag on top of the suitcase, and then turned round to me for his fare. The laptop fell off the suitcase with a loud thump.

When I opened the bag, I found that the laptop casing was squewed, the DVD drive was permanently jammed open, and there was an ominous rattle coming from deep inside the computer. But, wonder of wonders, it booted up and worked. So I left it like that. I didn?t even try to fix the DVD drive or straighten anything at all, until the presentation was over and I was safely back in Sydney.

So, Gerv, cabs are not safe modes of transport for presentations either. :)

Good solid advice

Scott?s book is full of stories, and it?s full of tips too. The advice on page 19 rings true with me, about the importance of practising your presentation thoroughly. Page 21 has some great tips about how to prepare immediately before your speech.

I loved the description of the importance of a title. It ?divides the universe into what you will talk about and what you won?t?. (Page 61.) And there?s an inspiring description of the only moment when you?ll have the full attention of everyone in the room: the silence just before you start speaking! (Page 80.)

Scott reveals a mild obsession with and definite antipathy towards chandeliers. (Page 40-4.) But hey, we?re all entitled to our oddities. ;)

The book emphasizes the importance of simplicity. This is something close to a technical writer?s heart too. On page 162, Scott explains that it is our duty as speakers to simplify and clarify our points. The audience should not be doing the hard work. We should.

Thank you Scott

Thank you for a good read! I?d like to be in a room and hear Scott speak, putting all these techniques into practice. Especially if there?s a chandelier in the vicinity. ;)

Chances for gas pump price breaks appear slim (AP)

The chances for late-summer discounts at the gas pump are looking pretty slim.

Americans are paying about 15 cents more for a gallon of gas now than they did over the July Fourth weekend and nearly $1 more than a year ago. The national average for a gallon of regular was $3.695 a gallon Friday, up 0.6 cent overnight, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service.

In a rare twist, California drivers aren't paying the highest prices in the lower 48 states. That unwelcome distinction belongs to the Northeast. Refinery and import issues have tightened supplies there, while gas is more plentiful in California, according to Fred Rozell, retail pricing director at OPIS.

California drivers paid an average of $3.813 a gallon on Friday. Motorists paid $4.036 a gallon in Connecticut and $3.944 in New York. Prices in Hawaii and Alaska still top $4 a gallon. The cheapest prices were in the Rocky Mountains, Mississippi and parts of the Midwest.

Analysts expect gas prices to be fairly consistent in the next few months, barring a hurricane that threatens Gulf Coast refinery operations or significant economic news affecting the price of oil, Rozell thinks pump prices will remain in a narrow range for the rest of the year before they climb again next spring.

Oil prices were a little higher on Friday as U.S. lawmakers continued to debate spending plans and raising the nation's debt ceiling. Failure to raise the limit by the Aug 2 deadline means the U.S. would default on its debt.

Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude rose 74 cents to settle at $99.87 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude gained $1.16 to settle at $118.67 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

Investors worry that failure to resolve debt problems in the U.S. and Europe could cause the global economy to slow, and cut demand for commodities such as oil.

Fitch ratings agency said Greece will be in default on its debt as a result of a new bailout plan crafted by European leaders that asks investors to take losses on the country's bonds.

Debt issues on both continents have "played havoc with the price of oil in recent weeks," PFG analyst Phil Flynn said. Since the beginning of the month, the price of oil has ranged from about $94 a barrel to just over $100.

The dollar has contributed to oil's volatility. It's been up and down against major currencies this month. Oil, like most commodities, is priced in dollars. If the dollar weakens, oil becomes more of a bargain for investors who use other currencies and the price tends to rise.

In Friday trading for other Nymex contracts, heating oil rose 2.86 cents to settle at $3.1415 per gallon, gasoline futures gained 3.39 cents to settle at $3.0906 per gallon and natural gas rose less than a penny to settle at $4.370 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Assets under management were $3.659 trillion at June 30, up 16 percent from a year earlier and up 0.3 percent from the end of the first quarter.

Fink said the results showed his emphasis on new areas is paying off. On a conference call with analysts, he said BlackRock's broad product mix will lead to a deeper relationship with clients and drive revenue and profits.

"That is our strategy. And our strategy has shown in the second quarter that it is working," Fink said. Many clients are looking for longer-term guidance amid uncertain world markets, and "no other firm in the business is as well positioned for that type of dialogue," he added.

OUTPACING RIVALS

Analysts agreed BlackRock's gains reflected its wide range of products, allowing growth in volatile markets.

"This is a company that I would expect to continue to hit singles and doubles," said Calyon Securities analyst Chris Spahr, using a baseball analogy. "There are not going to be many swings and misses because they're so big."

BlackRock shares were up 1 percent at $185.08 in midday trading. The company is the first large publicly traded asset manager to report second-quarter earnings and continued a good run. In the 12 months that ended Tuesday, BlackRock shares rose 20 percent. That bested several smaller managers with poorer results, or more known for equity funds, that have had trouble attracting assets. For instance, Janus Capital Group (JNS.N) shares are down 11 percent over the same period, while AllianceBernstein Holding LP (AB.N) is off 35 percent.

BlackRock said it had about 9,700 employees as of June 30, up from 8,500 a year earlier.

NO LONGER JUST ABOUT FLOWS

In a note to investors, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Douglas Sipkin wrote that BlackRock's scale means it is not as dependent on inflows of cash as rivals. "BLK is no longer a play on flow momentum, although we do believe organic growth trends will head higher throughout the year," he wrote.

Investors added a net $18.4 billion to BlackRock's long-term funds in the second quarter, excluding outflows in money funds, specialized portfolios and merger-related flows.

As at other fund companies, volatile markets during the quarter meant BlackRock faced both market depreciation and net redemptions from some stock funds. Outflows from its active equity products totaled $8.9 billion.

But investors added money in most other areas. BlackRock's popular iShares exchange traded funds took in $11.6 billion, up 11 percent from the first quarter. Investors added $20.7 billion to multi-asset class products, which BlackRock said reflected demand for fiduciary and asset allocation services.

GROWTH STRATEGIES

For Fink, 58, the string of strong results shows the growing influence of the company he helped found in 1988. Initially, the company was the money management arm of the large BlackStone private equity firm; it was spun out in 1995.

Merrill Lynch later came to own almost half of BlackRock, and in 2007 there were reports that Merrill had spoken to Fink about bringing him in as CEO of the investment bank. That never came to pass, and Fink rode out the financial crisis at a company with little subprime exposure.

On Wednesday's conference call, Fink and BlackRock Chief Financial Officer Ann Marie Petach said BlackRock has reported the last of outflows stemming from the company's 2009 purchase of Barclays Global Investors, a milestone analysts had expected.

Separately, Petach said BlackRock has signed a new lease to move employees in London from two buildings into one, and expects to move most employees during the third quarter. The move will lead to a charge of $75 million to $100 million in the second half, she said.
