"Information wants to be free" has been one of the rallying cries of geeks, digital activists and hackers since the earliest days of the net.
That's free in the sense of not costing a penny and in the sense that it is always looking for ways to escape. It wants to get out from the databases and drives where it is stored and mingle with the web users of the world.
For a long time the information being freed online has been the expertise of web users. Many, many communities have sprung up around the places where information on all manner of subjects is shared.
Increasingly, the information finding its way on to the web is the raw stuff, the numbers, the data.
Some of that data comes from day-to-day use of the web but many organisations - local and national governments, corporations and web firms - are making huge stores of it available to anyone and everyone to play with.
Even better, the data visualisation tools that can manipulate and present that information are getting easier to use and available to anyone.
When it comes to data, visualisation means turning those raw numbers into graphs, diagrams and animations.
Visualisation helps understand the ebb and flow of bike hire in London "There's a strength to visualisation because if you showed the data as a series of numbers it wouldn't mean much," said Dr Martin Austwick, a research fellow at UCL's Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis who uses data visualisation techniques in his work.
In one project, Dr Austwick has been visualising data generated by users of Boris bikes in London to map the ebb and flow of the hireable bicycles around the capital. It is, he said, a great example of the complex data sets that people are starting to visualise.
The data involves about 400 bike stands that log when a bike is picked up or dropped off from them. They know which bike has gone where so estimates can be made of the route a user takes between two stands.
Understanding the dynamics of this any other way than visually would be impossible, said Dr Austwick.
Animating it, using circles glowing blue and red to represent activity at bike stands, makes it almost symphonic. It lays bare one of the dynamics of London life.
"We're trying to find patterns in the disorder and map the underlying ebbs and flows of the city," he said.
A recent convert to data visualisation is Andy Kirk who has spent much of his working life in operational research roles. That job typically involves gathering data about a process or procedure within a business then carrying out exhaustive analysis to find better ways to do it.

When he took up a job in academia, Mr Kirk started questioning how he presented the data he was analysing and started looking for tools to help do a better job.
He was lucky because at about the same time that the software tools to do data visualisation, many of them open source and freely available, were starting to appear.
For him those visualisation tools often provide a quick route to understanding what data has captured. The best visualisations were a mix of art and science, said Mr Kirk, and use the aesthetics to lay bare what would otherwise stay concealed.
"It brings patterns to light that would not otherwise see," he said. "It's about making data accessible but that does not necessarily mean simplistic."
The trends in data can become very apparent when animated Data visualisation can mean that the facts buried in a data set become unearthed, no matter how unpalatable they are.
"You can obscure truth with statistics," said Mr Kirk, "but the beauty of visualisation when done correctly is that it brings out the true pattern that can be uncomfortable to interpret."
On that theme, Mr Kirk is helping to judge a competition that aims to find the best way to visualise data about the ethnic breakdown of students at Britain's universities.
The competition came about via a Tweet from data visualisation guru David McCandless who did not have time to do the job himself.
And it is in the social and political aspects of data visualisation that its real value emerges.
"If you make these tools and data available to a broader range of people you are just going to get better ideas," said Dr Austwick.
Given that a lot of the data becoming available is from official sources, those better ideas could have a lasting impact.
"Long term, if you can analyse these systems and understand them a lot better we can have policy improvements that make them work better," he said. "These are things that affect a lot of people, it's about quality of life."

VATICAN CITY (AFP) ? The Vatican formally unveiled its new Internet information portal news.va on Wednesday, a day after Pope Benedict XVI launched the initiative with his first Twitter message sent from an iPad.
A smiling pope was seen tapping on his iPad with the help of cardinals surrounding him in video footage released by the Vatican. The screen saver on the tablet was a picture of the pope as a young man with his family.
The 84-year-old pontiff, dressed in a white cassock at the head of a long wooden table in the Vatican, can be seen tapping on a link with the word "Publish" which does not appear to work but then scrolls through the website.
The pope used his official name in Latin -- the Vatican's official language -- to launch the site on Tuesday with a tweet reading: "Praised be our Lord Jesus Christ! With my prayers and blessings, Benedictus XVI."
The website brings together news from Vatican media including the official daily Osservatore Romano, Vatican radio and television and the Catholic Church's missionary news agency which covers the developing world.
News.va will also be updating the faithful on Vatican events and important events concerning Catholics around the world through Twitter, YouTube videos and photos on Flickr. The website was developed by a Spanish web design agency.

MONDAY, June 27 (HealthDay News) -- Even though radiation after mastectomy for advanced breast cancer has been proven to save lives and multiple guidelines call for it, nearly half of these patients don't receive it, researchers say.
Between 1999 and 2005, only 55 percent of older high-risk breast cancer patients who should have undergone radiation therapy actually received it, according to the study that appears online June 27 in the journal Cancer.
"When physicians are not guided by published evidence, there is the chance that patient outcomes will suffer or that patients will undergo unnecessary treatments and tests," study co-leader Dr. Shervin Shirvani, of the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said in a journal news release.
The M.D. Anderson Cancer Center scientists analyzed data from 38,322 older women with advanced breast cancer who underwent mastectomy (partial or complete removal of one or both breasts) in the United States between 1992 and 2005.
Following the publication of clinical trials that revealed its benefits, the use of radiation after mastectomy increased from 36.5 percent in 1996 to 57.7 percent in 1998, the researchers found. However, no further increase occurred between 1999 and 2005, despite the release of a number of major guidelines endorsing it.
The researchers expressed concern that so many providers appear to be ignoring the evidence-based guidelines.
"Beyond the potential for distress and injury to the individual patient, there is also the strong likelihood that medical resources will be wasted on unproven or ineffective treatments," Shirvani said.
More needs to be done to make sure that helpful findings from clinical trials are widely implemented in patient care, the researchers concluded.

If the paper from the cutout coloring books is too thin, your kids can use them as templates for cardstock or other thicker paper. Comic Book Review: 'Reverse Flash' #1 ? Flashpoint Tie-in ...
I?m going to get the positives of the Reverse Flash Flashpoint tie-in out of the way first. I?m not saying this is a bad book, but I have a few gripes.
First, this book is really well written. Scott Kolins did a great job making you feel for Barry Allen as his life was pointed in a direction not intended for him by a psychopath. Speaking of a psychopath, you really feel the frustration and anger Eobard Thawne feels towards Barry, it is almost tangible; as if it is a character all its own.
Second, Joel Gomez and the rest of the art teams? gritty, almost unpolished, art makes this book pop! The panels where Thawne is attempting to keep Barry from becoming the Flash are very cool. Throughout the entire book, they?do a great job showing just what a loser the Reverse Flash is when it comes to fighting the Flash.
Ok, I?ve got my kudos out of the way? time to gripe. If you read any of the 12 Flash comic books from the Flash on-going series over the past year, you know everything that happened in this book. If you have been aware of the Flash for? oh I don?t know the past 30 years; you know everything that happened in this book.
Was it a good story? Yes. Is it worth buying? Probably not. It doesn?t add to the Flashpoint story at all. It was basically a money grab by DC Comics to get $2.99 from their loyal readers and collectors. The other issue with this book? it is really a One-Shot. That?s right, up in the top left corner, just below the #1, it says First Issue, of Three. In reality it should say? One-Shot. It ends at a familiar place in Barry Allen?s life. A place revealed during the recently ended Flash on-going series.
While the writing is good in this book and the art is nearly perfect for this tale, you can go ahead and skip this book. Not because it is bad, but because there are 52 DCnU titles coming out in about 3 months and we DC Comic Fanboys and Fangirls need to save all the pennies we can to make sure we can see where our favorite heroes end up in the DCnU!

Fed Up With Cable Try Satellite

Our cable company provided our TV programming for years until the day they shut off our cable for someone else?s unpaid bills. It was a mistake on their part and it took two weeks for them to even acknowledge they made the mistake. When they offered to turn the cable back on, my husband and I declined. We decided that if their customer service was that bad it was only going to get worse. We now use DISH Net TV and we could not be happier. They have wonderful customer service, great programming, and they are affordable. We even saved money by switching.

Gym Class Heroes Get Shady In 'Stereo Hearts' Video

Gym Class Heroes don't exactly have a lot to do in the video for "Stereo Hearts," the first single from their upcoming The Papercut Chronicles II. Instead, it's their shadows that handle most of the heavy lifting.
"The video basically plays on the idea that we're sort of just being casual, hanging out, being ourselves and our shadows get wild and get loose," drummer Matt McGinley told MTV News on the video set. "It's kind of fun. I've always felt like my shadow has been trying to kill me for 28 years."
"That's just me," frontman Travie McCoy laughed, "creeping up on your ass."
So while the GCH guys were content to crack jokes and let their shadows have the spotlight on the "Stereo" set, they're taking the opposite approach when it comes to their new album. Because not only is it a sequel to their beloved 2005 album, it's their return to prominence after McCoy's Lazarus solo trek and a break that was, by all accounts, too long.
"We just played a show at the Nokia in L.A., and just to see how elated kids were that we were back together again, I almost cried, I'm not going to lie," McCoy said. "We've been away too long, and anyone who thought me putting out Lazarus was the end of Gym Class Heroes was definitely proven wrong with that show."
And with "Stereo Hearts," they're officially getting back to business. Produced by Bennie Blanco and featuring Maroon 5's Adam Levine on the hook, it's a prime-time slab of genre-mashing, sweat-inducing pop, the kind of song that may very well push GCH to summertime superstardom. And, in working with Levine, they've learned about taking the next step too.
"It's a fun love song at the end of the day, and it's definitely got a summertime vibe ... and having Adam bless us with his vocal stylings doesn't hurt much," McCoy said. "He just destroyed it. Watching that dude do [vocal] runs, and first he belts out the hook, and I'm like, 'OK!' then he does overdubs and he's like, 'Nah, I don't like that, I can do better.' Everything's just flawless and dude's so talented. Just getting into a song and pushing it, it was inspiring."
