A good reputation ? Musicians and Bands, hold back on the announcements till they are a lock.

All musicians and bands already know It is so key to have a good reputation with friends, fans and followers. You want to make sure that from marketing to social media promotion and everywhere in between, your word is good and you are trustworthy and not just a BS wannabe hype machine.

So when something like this comes down the pike?.where you just got booked for this album or that tour? You just found out you are working with this person or that person? You are in talks with some one for some big project or some big event? Dying to share it and you want to tell the world??? Three simple things to do first though?.

1. PUT ON THE BRAKES!

2. SHUT UP!

3. WAIT TILL IT IS A LOCK!

Too many people talk too much trash. There are so many wannabes, so many fakes, so many bullshit artists and so many flat out liars in the music industry or for that matter entertainment as a whole.

When you tell the world something that is either in very early stages, many things can happen that can change the outcome or all out cancel it together. When you talk too soon and those cancellations happen, whether it is your doing or not, you are the one that looks bad. You are the one that looks like the shit talker, the liar and being put in to a category with people you do not want to be in.

I remember a point in my career before I was a music producer and music consultant, as a drummer where I was so excited at everything that was coming down the pike from gigs to tours to albums. Even though we didn?t have social media back then, I wanted to tell everyone everything right after I got off the phone. Now life happens and so do cancellations, changes and alterations. As things changed as they always do, I was the one that looked bad for saying things were going to happen that didn?t end up happening. It didn?t matter if a tour was postponed or an album had to be moved. It didn?t matter who?s fault it was, it was on me because I said it and it didn?t happen.

So I put on the brakes, I shut up and waited till things were a secure lock. As much as I wanted to scream from the mountain tops about certain things, I waited. In turn, I got even better reactions from people and friends as things I talked about happened or how people were blown away how certain things just seemed to all the sudden come together, even though I had been working to put these projects together over a number of weeks and even months.

With social media now, it is even more of a challenge for some. People get an email, get off the phone and then scream from the rooftops. With announcements that are way too premature and way too early, it has the potential to set you up for failure.

So wait till you announce. Keep the cool names you are working with quiet until contracts are signed, events are locked in or for that matter, information is listed somewhere about it in a place or from a source that isn?t you. Your reputation in any business is crucial, especially with so many liars and fakes out there. So, wait, keep your mouth shut and wait till things are locked in. Even some locked in things can cancel too, but the more you wait on it all, the less you will be telling people things are changing.
