? ? ? ? Plot

After the death of Prof. Charles Xavier, it seemed like everything had come to an end- but it hadn't. There were still mutants, everywhere- living, dying, being born- and they still needed just as much help as ever to survive among humans, if not more. Just as life had to go on, so did the school. Every year, a new generation of mutants, gifted youngsters, is accepted to Xavier's Institute, and the death of a great man would not stop that. With Magnito human, it seemed that the worst of it was over. Now, a generation later, a new threat has arisen. There are still believers. Children of the old teams walk the halls of Xavier's Institute, and even more live among the rest of the world. Within them, some fight for the cause Magnito lost his power going after; and some fight to defend the lives of the innocent. Which side are you on?

? ? ? ? Rules

? You may play any character that is a child of someone from the X-Men movies (or comics/graphic novels) or an OC. You may also play any of the canon characters, but keep in mind that they will be a bit on the older side of the spectrum, as this is a generation later.

? Be nice. You don't have to be all lovey-dovey, but please, do not start fights in the OOC. We're here to have fun! Your character(s) can be the biggest jerk(s) ever, if you want, but leave the drama where it belongs. Thank you! ?

? I realize that some of your characters won't exactly look human. I also realize that it can be excruciatingly difficult and frustrating to try to find that one person in the world that looks like the character in your head, and fail. Because of this, the picture in your character sheet does not have to be of a real person. I can be of a drawing, painting, whatever you want, so long as it satisfies the image in your head. If you can't find anything, anywhere, that looks remotely like your character, and you don't believe that you have the ability to create the image yourself, then you don't have to have a picture. It's pretty simple. I do ask, however, that if you have a picture that isn't yours, you credit the model/photographer/artist/etc. somewhere in your sheet, even if it's just a link in the picture. Also, if you do not have a picture, keep in mind that the appearance section of your character sheet must be extra detailed.

? Please, I don't mind your character's mutations having little to do with their parents', but if they are completely and totally different, you need to have a reason. For characters with human carriers as parents, this is void.

Brain cells know which way you'll bet

Neural activity in nucleus accumbens foretells card-game decision making

Web edition : Monday, February 27th, 2012

SALT LAKE CITY ? When it comes tough financial decisions, people are often clueless. But some cash-savvy nerve cells deep in the brain know what to do. And these cells know the plan seconds before the person actually decides on a course of action, new research shows.

The findings, presented February 25 at the Computational and Systems Neuroscience meeting, may help scientists understand how people make difficult decisions.

Shaun Patel of Massachusetts General Hospital and colleagues enlisted eight people undergoing experimental therapy to alleviate severe depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder that involved implanting electrodes deep into the brain.

During surgery, the electrodes eavesdropped on the behavior of individual nerve cells in an otherwise unreachable area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. Other places in the brain feed lots of diverse signals to the nucleus accumbens: Information about a person?s emotions, memories and more sophisticated reasoning ? key ingredients for decision making ? all flow into this area.

While in the operating room, participants played about 250 rounds of a simplified version of the card game ?War,? in which two players each receive a card, and the higher card wins. The deck contained only cards numbered 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 ? all spades.

Participants saw a video screen with their card face up next to a face-down opponent?s card. After a short wait, the players pushed one of two buttons to bet either $5 or $20 that they?d beat their opponent. Finally, the face-down card was flipped over, and the participants saw the results of their wager.

Meanwhile, researchers detected 19 nerve cells in the nucleus accumbens that seemed to be involved in the betting. Electrical signals from these cells predicted whether a person would bet high or low. Most surprisingly, this nerve cell pattern was evident about 2.8 seconds before a player pushed a button ? a delay so long that it?s ?unheard of in neuroscience,? Patel said.

These nerve cells receive information from other brain systems and call the shots fast, before the rest of the brain catches up, Patel said. ?The brain is presumably calculating these things before you?re conscious of it.?

For difficult decisions, such as whether to bet high or low on a six of spades, a few key outbursts from this handful of nerve cells might be the deciding factor.?

Neuroscientist Naoshige Uchida of Harvard University cautions that the results are based on the average behavior of a small number of nerve cells. Nonetheless, these kinds of experiments that reveal single nerve cell behavior in human brains hold promise, he says. ?I think it?s a fascinating direction to go in.?

(AP) ? One person is dead, dozens are injured and some are trapped in their homes after a powerful storm system bearing a string of possible tornadoes battered a tourist hub and mobile home park in southwest Missouri.

Rescue crews awaited sunrise Wednesday to begin scouring the trailer park south of Buffalo where at least one person was killed after an apparent tornado slammed the area overnight, Lt. Dana Eagan of the Dallas County Sheriff's Office said.

The storm left another 13 people at the park injured and knocked out power to all of Buffalo, Eagan said. Buffalo is about 35 miles north of Springfield.

An apparent tornado left at least a dozen more people injured further south in Branson, trapping some people in their homes, National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Griffin.

Searchers were going from house to house early Wednesday, Taney County Sheriff Jimmie Russell. The National Weather Service typically sends teams in the hours and days following a storm of this size to determine if a tornado struck.

Griffin said the storm left a trail of destruction in downtown Branson, scattering the area with debris and uprooted road signs, and heavily damaging buildings in the city's famous theater district.

Branson is one of the Midwest's major tourist attractions, drawing millions each year to its theaters and amusement parks. Entertainers such as Andy Williams, comedian Yakov Smirnoff and Jim Stafford have settled in the city.

In neighboring Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback declared a state of emergency late Tuesday after an apparent tornado struck Harveyville.

The declaration covered Wabaunsee County, southwest of Topeka. A news release from the governor's office said one person was critically injured, several homes and a church were damaged, and trees and power lines were down.

Earlier, the National Weather Service reported brief tornado touchdowns southwest of Hutchinson, Kan.

Analysis: Kingfisher's nosedive poses dilemma for India

NEW DELHI | Sat Feb 25, 2012 9:18pm EST

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - As Kingfisher Airlines (KING.NS) careens toward collapse, the Indian government finds itself between a rock and a hard place.

The government, already weakened by a string of corruption scandals over the past year, will face further political heat if it tries to rescue a money-losing private carrier - especially one owned by a flamboyant liquor baron.

If it lets Vijay Mallya's airline fail, however, the government will hurt state-run banks, which own about a fifth of Kingfisher's shares and three-quarters of its $1.3 billion debt.

Kingfisher is struggling with fewer flights and pilots, staff demoralised by unpaid salaries, and outstanding dues to aircraft lessors, oil companies, airports and tax authorities.

It needs at least $400 million quickly to keep flying, figures Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA), a consultancy. Mallya's plans to raise funds through a share sale have been stalled and he has been lobbying the government to get state-run banks to lend more.

The fast clip at which the government has moved to change regulations in the past two months - airlines can now directly import fuel, lowering their costs, and private carriers can fly overseas more - has lifted expectations that Mallya may eventually win the help he needs from the government.

"India: Kingfisher's national carrier," one Tweeter quipped last week.

A government bailout for a private carrier would not go down well with the public in India, where airlines are still not the common man's preferred mode of travel. Conscious of that, the government insists it is not looking to bail Kingfisher out.

Mallya avoids the bailout word too and, instead, says he is only asking for more working capital, which Aviation Minister Ajit Singh says is up to the banks to decide on.

However, late last year Prime Minister Manmohan Singh spoke of finding ways to help Kingfisher, which has led many to believe that in the end the government will come to its rescue.

"Is the government being duplicitous about its stand on the increasingly distressed Kingfisher Airlines?" the daily Business Standard wrote in an editorial, advocating no more funds from state banks for a carrier that wasn't 'too big to fail'.

Saving a private airline would be risky for Singh's government, which has faced pressure from allies, political opponents and civil activists for more than a year over graft.

"After all the charges of crony capitalism ... if the government rolls out the red carpet for Kingfisher, it will once again come under attack," said Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a political analyst.

Mallya, whose liquor business clout helped win him a seat in the upper house of parliament two years ago, could use his political ties to save the carrier he started in 2005.

Allowing foreign carriers to buy a stake in Indian carriers is probably the key policy step Kingfisher desperately wants the government to take. Unlike in 2007, when ailing airlines were bought over by Kingfisher and Jet Airways <JET.NS), there are no domestic carriers circling to buy up rivals today.

"In the short term, it is in urgent need of money. If they get about 10 billion rupees ($200 million) now, that will last them about three to six months; and after that we will definitely have FDI (approval for foreign direct investment)," said Sharan Lillaney, an aviation analyst at Angel Broking.

However, foreign carriers have shown little interest so far in investing in the Indian airline sector, which has grown by 17 percent in 2011 but intense competition has driven five out of six local carriers to massive losses.

Indian carriers are on course to post cumulative losses of up to $3 billlion for financial 2011/12, CAPA estimates.

"I don't think FDI is the answer to all the problems. Indian carriers need to resolve the fundamental issues of excess capacity, high cost structures and unviable pricing strategies," said Kapil Arora, a partner with Ernst & Young.

NEWSMAKER - Turbulence for India's

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^>

DREAMS TURN SOUR

After India embraced economic reforms two decades ago, a slew of private carriers rose in the Indian skies and then ran into the ground.

Modiluft, East West, NEPC Airlines and several others shut down operations within a few years of their launch for reasons ranging from inability to manage cost to funding concerns.

Mallya, who had so far run a very successful liquor empire - turning it into the world's second-largest by volume through acquisitions - probably chose to ignore past lessons.

He took pride in getting a five-star rating for his airline, making it the first Indian carrier to provide passengers with a personal video screen, offered a superior level of service and even hand-picked air hostesses himself.

For Mallya, who owns several yachts as well as cricket and Formula One teams, an airline was an extension of his persona.

"For sure, there was ego and vanity at play because even when he started the airline it was not a secret worldwide that the airline business doesn't bring in easy money," said Santosh Desai, a brand strategist and columnist.

In a rush to expand, Mallya acquired Air Deccan in 2007 for $220 million, a deal that saved the tottering low-cost carrier but over-leveraged Kingfisher.

Soon after, a global downturn hit Indian carriers hard, choking access to the equity market. Most airlines survived the crisis, but a debt mountain built up at Kingfisher and the top carrier, Jet Airways (JET.NS). Equity markets recovered, but Kingfisher failed to raise fresh funds.

This, along with operational losses partly due to high fuel costs - Kingfisher has never reported a profit - were crippling.

Questions have also been raised about its business model.

"India is a very price-sensitive market. In transportation, it is a volumes game; many of the frills do not matter in a short two-hour flight," said Amber Dubey, director of aviation at global consultancy firm KPMG.

"What passengers really want is on-time performance (OTP), clean and safe aircraft, efficient service and low fares."

Kingfisher now flies only 175 daily flights from a peak of 400 six months ago, with only 28 of its fleet of 64 operational. Lessors have started cancelling leases for planes, and the aircraft Kingfisher owns are mostly pledged with lenders.

An uncertain future and delayed salaries have driven away about 300 pilots and a few hundred other staff to rivals.

The carrier is also losing prime slots at key airports, which, along with a staff crunch, may prevent a quick return to normal operations even if it does survive this debt tsunami.

About nine-tenths of Mallya's 58.61 percent stake in Kingfisher is pledged. Even the brand 'Kingfisher' has been used as collateral, according to media reports.

The company is now seeking to restructure its $1.3 billion debt, which may force lenders to take a writedown, extend fresh loans and make Mallya plough in fresh equity.

This has been in the works for six months, however, and it is unlikely an agreement can be reached in a hurry.

In a deal done early last year, lenders converted debt into a stake of just over 23 percent in the carrier at about 65 rupees a share. But the stock has lost about 60 percent since the beginning of 2011, closing down 4.35 percent at 24.20 rupees on Friday.

THE FALLOUT

Kingfisher's end, if it happens, would be the biggest failure in Indian aviation history and would impact the sector in the short term.

"If you see such a substantial number of seats being removed from the market suddenly, it will have a very adverse impact on the fares," said E.K. Bharat Bhushan, chief of India's aviation regulator.

A collapse could also lead to thousands of job cuts and the withdrawal of flights on some loss-making routes that Kingfisher flies exclusively or shares with state-run Air India.

Kingfisher's market share in domestic skies, which has halved to about one-tenth in recent months, will get divided among rivals, with the low-cost carriers benefitting most.

Ever since Air India and Kingfisher flew into turbulence, budget carriers' market shares have increased dramatically.

If Mallya can keep moving levers in Delhi, as he has in the past, Kingfisher could remain more than a brand of beer. If he falters and the government withdraws the life support, Kingfisher could run into the ground quickly.

The failure would also dent Mallya's image, crafted through the years with massive display of wealth, wine and women.

"Mallya represented the extreme of an exuberance that India has seen lately," said Santosh Desai. "But business cycles can be cruel and those traditional values of caution and prudence take precedence over unfettered ambition."

'American Idol' Reveals Season 11 Top 24

But in a twist, it's announced that one of four eliminated contestants will be welcomed back next week for the first Top 25.
By Adam Graham

"American Idol" revealed its final 10 semifinalists Thursday (February 23), rounding out the Top 24 that will compete for America's votes during season 11's live episodes, which begin next week.

The remaining 10 contestants were chosen from the pool of 42 sent to Las Vegas to compete for the chance to perform on the live shows. The first 14, including Heejun Han (Heejun Han!), were unveiled during Wednesday's episode.

Thursday's show picked up with the cliffhanger from Wednesday, regarding the fate of 27-year-old Adam Brock. The teary-eyed Brock made it, of course; "American Idol" can be cruel (see last week's brutal "Gotcha!" twist), but it's not cruel enough to let a contestant hang in the balance for a full day and then not let him through. Especially one with a cute little girl at home.

The toughest cut Thursday was the one dealt to Jermaine Jones, the 25-year-old baritone-voiced "gentle giant" who took the news very hard, nearly collapsing in tears. Most shocking was the elimination of David Leathers Jr., the would-be heartthrob nicknamed "Mr. Steal Your Girl" who was thought early on to be one of the contestants to beat, despite the fact that the bow-tied 17-year-old looked like he was 12.

But in a shocking final twist — "GOTCHA!" — it was revealed at the end of the episode that either Leathers, Jones, Richie Law or Johnny Keyser will return next week to join the show, making it a Top 25. Isn't "Idol" fun?

Here is the full list of the season's Top 24 contestants:

» Adam Brock, 27, Washington, Pennsylvania
» Jeremy Rosado, 19, Valrico, Florida
» Eben Franckewitz, 15, Loveland, Ohio
» Shannon Magrane, 16, Tampa, Florida
» Hallie Day, 24, Baltimore, Maryland
» Chase Likens, Point Pleasant, New Jersey
» Aaron Marcellus, 27, Atlanta
» DeAndre Brackensick, 17, San Jose, California
» Skylar Laine, 18, Brandon, Mississippi
» Hollie Cavanagh, 18, McKinney, Texas
» Heejun Han, 22, Flushing, New York
» Phillip Phillips, 21, Leesburg, Georgia
» Creighton Fraker, 28, Queens, New York
» Jen Hirsh, 25, Agoura Hills, California
» Chelsea Sorrell, 23, Stokesdale, Arizona
» Elise Testone, 28, Charleston, South Carolina
» Reed Grimm, 26, Ellsworth, Wisconsin
» Joshua Ledet, 19, Westlake, Louisiana
» Erika Van Pelt, 26, South Kingstown, Rhode Island
» Baylie Brown, 22, Krum, Texas
» Jessica Sanchez, 16, San Diego
» Colton Dixon, 20, Murfreesboro, Tennessee
» Haley Johnsen, 23, Beaverton, Oregon
» Brielle Von Hugel, 17, Staten Island, New York

Next week, the men compete during Tuesday's two-hour episode and the women square off on Wednesday's two-hour showdown, and the first finalists will be revealed on Thursday's two-hour live results show.

What do you think of this year's Top 24? Let us know in the comments!

New Family of Limbless Amphibians Discovered in India

News | Evolution

The new family of caecilians includes seven new species of the soil-dwelling creatures and adds a new branch to the amphibian tree of life

Image: Proceedings of the Royal Society B

From Nature magazine.

An entirely new family of amphibians has been discovered hiding in the soils of northeastern India.

In total, seven new species of these limbless, soil-dwelling and rather ugly creatures were unearthed by a team of researchers digging for over 1,000 man-hours.

?The discovery adds a major branch to the amphibian tree of life,? note Sathyabhama Das Biju of the University of Delhi, and his colleagues in their paper, published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

These creatures are members of the caecilian order of amphibians, which look more like earthworms than their better-known classmates the frogs and toads, and can grow to be more than a metre long. They build nests underground and brood their young there, as shown above with Chikila fulleri. More than 500 examples of the new family of caecilians were found in 58 locations in northeastern India.

The new species are just the latest triumph for Biju, whose website details some of the 100-plus new species his team has described.

Sadly, as nearly always seems to be the case, the paper describing these new creatures comes with this caveat:

?Further explorations and conservation actions are urgent because the region?s biodiversity is generally under high threat from the growing resident human population and rapid deforestation."

Difference of Local Small Business Marketing Online

The World Wide Web is indeed making its name, literally. The Internet is fast becoming an instant form of communication towards individuals from almost every part of the world, and with local and international businesses developing websites in order for these Internet users to view and possibly be potential consumers for their product or service. This virtual world seems to be making our world more compact and connected, with a lot of business and personal websites wanting to have that space where people can easily see their website, amongst the thousands of other business competitors.

However, there is a niche when it comes to local small businesses. When compared with international or large businesses, their target market would be much smaller, since they can only reach out to one specific location, it would also depend on their line of business, if it for the general public or for a smaller target market. Either way, marketing a small local business may be quite different when compared with international businesses.

For local small business marketing, the techniques used must be more focused and in tune with the local community. Of course, the competition will decrease significantly, but there would still be competitors present. For most small businesses operating locally, their best bet would be to ask for professional Internet marketing services.

Companies that have proper experience and knowledge on local small business marketing techniques are there to help small businesses reach out to a wider audience, even if it is out of their location. More often than not, this increases the chances of them being visible online, thus giving them an edge against their local competitors. This would also add to their level of popularity, making sure that people who will be visiting their location would remember about their business through their website.

Local small business marketing techniques does not differ from the usual internet marketing techniques. However, considering the scope of their business, these marketing strategies are tweaked so that it can effectively market the business without being too overboard. Internet marketing companies make sure that their strategies are in line with the business industry, as well as their target market on the local scene.

Even if the business is small or just starting, getting professional assistance from local small business marketing companies can certainly help with regards to letting the local community know about the business. By having the right techniques and practicing the right website management, the small business is definitely off to a great start.

A CUP OF JO: Motherhood Mondays: The hardest two months of my ...

In an effort to be authentic, I'd like to talk about something difficult I went through as a new mother. A year ago, I went though the worst two months I've ever experienced. I never mentioned it on the blog. I couldn't; I was too overwhelmed. But now that a whole year has passed, I want to share my experience with you...

Flashback: Toby was eight months old. It was a chilly January in New York, and we had just had a blissful Christmas vacation. But suddenly I started feeling bad. Out of nowhere, my mind started obsessing and worrying about inconsequential things; I had trouble sleeping (I'd wake up in the night and feel gripped with anxiety and fear); I began feeling very down, like that heavy feeling you get in your chest when you're sad about something. Why? I had no idea. But I knew it wasn't good.

Over the next couple weeks, I felt worse and worse. I felt guilty because I had a wonderful baby, a loving husband, and a great life on paper, yet I was inexplicably falling apart. Although I had loved taking care of Toby since he was born eight months before, it suddenly seemed exhausting to look after a child. I dreaded hearing his cries in the morning and having to get out of bed and face the day. I felt utterly overwhelmed and exhausted. Work projects seemed especially intimidating. Even the smallest work decisions seemed like insurmountable obstacles, and I was quickly moved to tears. I felt certain I would disappoint the people I was working with and for.

My self esteem plummeted, and I felt completely overwhelmed. I would read other blogs--Oh Happy Day, Swissmiss--and think, how are these women doing so much? How can they handle everything--job, family, life--and get it all done and seem so happy? What is wrong with me? I wondered.

Through my sad eyes, I read blogs and saw strangers on the street and just assumed everyone had a perfect life. When I told that to Alex, he swore to me that everyone, without exception, had their own true story, their own struggles, their own flaws, worries, concerns; everyone is human. And then he said, "Look at your own blog, after all. People would have no idea that you?re going through this. You come off like you?re handling everything effortlessly." That was true, I realized. (I mean, look at this post, for example; I was feeling terrible and insecure that day. It?s the type of event I would have normally loved, but instead I felt self-conscious and lame.)

To explain my sadness and worry, I looked at my life and tried to point to something?my career, right? It must be ending, I figured. Everyone would surely stop reading my blog and it would just fade away; people would stop hiring me for projects, and I?d never get work again; I convinced myself of these things. And I was a bad mother?I didn?t know if I was making the right choices about sleep, food, discipline, everything. And I was a bad wife?I was suddenly boring and cried a lot. Alex would get sick of me. My friends would stop hanging out with me, I would be alone from now on, and then how would I fill the endless days? My mind took on crazy scenarios, and life felt so bleak.

When you're feeling down, you often compartmentalize it, right? You have to get out of bed in the morning, so you try to take a deep breath and get through as much as you can--working, going to dinner with friends, watching TV. You try to put your sadness out of your mind and put one foot in front of the other. I didn?t want these feelings to bleed into my whole life, so I tried to keep them bottled up as much as possible.

At the time, I wasn?t able to mention my sadness on the blog. Even now, I don't know what I would have said if I had written about it. And I didn?t want to admit--even to myself--how lost I suddenly felt. It was disorienting and inexplicable, and I felt like it would never end. My sadness felt like my new way of being.

(I *almost* mentioned it in this post, which I wrote right after I was feeling better again, but I couldn't. It was still too close to home.)

Although I try to keep Cup of Jo as honest and true as possible (and am always happy to share personal things), I wanted to keep the blog separate while I was depressed--and keep it?a place where I didn't have to think about my sleepless nights and strange sudden deep sadness and self doubt.

Even most of my best friends had no idea. I told Alex (of course; it was obvious to him), my parents, my sister and brother, and just a couple friends. I remember my sweet friend Jason took an afternoon off work to come hang out with me. I barely talked. I kept thinking that he must think I was so boring and wouldn't want to be friends with me anymore.

It came in waves. Sometimes I'd feel better, almost like myself again. Other times, I'd feel so overwhelmed with sadness and hopelessness that I'd feel like I couldn't move or breathe.

Honestly, it's hard to think back, but here are a few of the tough moments I remember:
* One evening, I was crying on the phone with my sister Lucy, while holding Toby. I looked up and saw myself in the mirror and thought how sad I looked, and how worried Toby looked, even though he was still so little.
* My mom came to visit, and I sat on the sofa and looked at the floor and could barely manage to whisper, "I am so depressed." I would just lie with my head in her lap and she would stroke my hair.
* I was walking down the street with Alex and Toby on a sunny day, but it felt dark to me. And, even though I adore them, I didn't want to be there, I didn't want to be anywhere. And Alex said to me, "You're so sad, you can barely walk down the street."
* I was walking to a work meeting on a snowy day. The whole world felt grey. I just wanted to lie down on the street and fall asleep. It was hard to keep moving.

One afternoon, while taking a walk along the Hudson River, I told my mom, who was visiting us, that I wished that Toby had a different mother. He deserved more, I thought. I felt like such a failure: I had always wanted to be a mother. I always had baby fever. I always looked forward to having children. But now that I had a sweet, curious, beautiful baby, I suddenly couldn't handle motherhood. I felt exhausted and inept. I hated seeing or reading about families with more than one child, because that meant that they could handle having a baby...and even choose to have another. What was wrong with me? I didn't want Toby to be affected by this weighty sadness I was feeling.

Writing down these words feels strange now. That time feels so far away from me, now that a year has passed, but it was so rattling and all-consuming at the time. I felt like a totally different person. I thought it would never end.

Of course, I had ok moments, too. I felt some relief when watching TV in the evenings. I liked having friends over, as long as I wasn't expected to talk much. Every Saturday afternoon, Toby and I would go to the Upper West Side for a playdate with my friend Leigh and her two sons. Hanging out at Leigh's apartment was cozy, she's easy to talk to, her boys were charming, Toby loved playing with their toys, she'd make a delicious lunch. Leigh had no idea that I felt so bad. I once told her that I felt overwhelmed by "the juggle" of everything, but I only mentioned it in passing. (She was shocked months later, when I told her the full story.) It was a relief to hang out with her and NOT talk about it. I still felt sad underneath, but I enjoyed those days and found them refreshing and bolstering.

But overall, for six weeks--from late January to early March--life felt really, really dark. I couldn't bear thinking about the future. Every day felt long and exhausting, and I couldn't imagine making it through all the days ahead of me.

My mom, my sister and Alex kept telling me over and over: This is a clinical depression, not your life; you must have some sort of chemical imbalance, some sort of medical reason why you?re feeling like this. But I didn't believe them; I thought I was just sad because I was lame and going to fail in life, but a tiny part of me held a flicker of hope that maybe they were right.

The funny thing about depression is that you don't know that it's depression?like, chemical imbalance in your brain, or a hormonal crash. You just think it's your actual life--that your career really IS ending, that you really ARE a terrible mother, that your husband really WILL stop loving you, that friends DO think you're boring. At any time in your life, if you just start feeling bad in your mind and mood, you can always come up with a random reason to point to--oh, it's my job! Oh, it's my dating life! Oh, it?s my looks! Oh, it's just me being an awkward person! When your depressed, you don't realize that your life actually is fine--you're simply sad because you're depressed. The depression is the reason for the depression.

After about six weeks of feeling so low, a funny thing happened: I woke up one Tuesday morning, and it was over. Just over. It felt like I had been swimming in a pool, and suddenly?woosh!?I had resurfaced and my head had come back out of the water, and I could see the bright sun and breathe in the fresh air again. It felt like waking up from a bad dream. Suddenly, I was myself again. That Tuesday morning, I woke up, the sun was shining and I felt happy again. My depression had just...ended.

And the crazy thing was: I got my period the very next day, for the first time in over a year and a half--since before my wedding day, since before I found out I was pregnant. It was as if my hormones had finally figured themselves out, and boom! I was back to normal. And that's the first time that I realized what had happened. Suddenly, I looked back at the situation and slapped my forehead with the realization: Of course! My depression was related to weaning.

Here's what had happened, I realized: In late January, I had decided to wean Toby from breastfeeding for a number of reasons, so I quite abruptly weaned him within a week. But instead of feeling liberated, I began feeling tired and sad and went into a downward spiral. The timing of the beginning of my depression (weaning Toby) and the end of my depression (getting my period again) lined up perfectly.

Next, I researched depression related to weaning and it all made sense. I've also now spoken to many other women who have been through the exact same situation--including the wife of our friend C., whom he described as getting "hit by a mack truck" when she weaned their baby.

A lovely Cup of Jo reader, who went through the same thing, had written to me: "When some women wean, they experience a depression similar to postpartum depression, because of the drop in the hormones prolactin and oxytocin. (Studies have shown these hormones produce the same kind of 'feel good' as cocaine or ecstasy.) So, when I weaned, I was having a hormonal crash, similar to a withdrawal. It was something my counselor didn?t catch until I told her?and it was something I really hadn?t heard about before. There are tons of online articles about the benefits of breastfeeding and about postpartum depression, but unless you are really looking for 'weaning' and 'depression' on google, you won't find much. This is unfortunate because I suspect many moms just chalk it up to lack of sleep, not adjusting to the new situation, or a plethora of other things...If I had known that depression was something to look out for when weaning, it would prevented a lot of turmoil (my husband wouldn't have felt as helpless, I could have taken more proactive, preventative measures, etc.)"

And I agree: Even though there's a wealth of information about postpartum depression right after you have a baby, it was virtually impossible to find information about depression related to weaning. But now that I've spoken to other mothers who have experienced the exact same thing, with the exact same timing, I know that it's a real condition. I found a mention here, and a forum here. [Update: A reader recommended reading this post, as well, thank you!] But otherwise, depression around weaning seems to be a real gap in medical research and awareness. (One psychiatrist, whom I called for an appointment, actually said to me, "Well, I guess anything?s possible.") I hope that people will become more aware of it, and more research and preventative measures will be developed.

Thankfully, once the depression ended, it really was over. This past year has been wonderful. My energy and confidence are back, and I'm honored and thrilled to be raising Toby, who is such a joy and a funny, lovely little person. I love my family with all my heart. W'll surely go through more ups and downs in life, but this year has been great?and restorative?and now I feel ready and able to handle future bumps in the road.

I wanted to share my experience, since, hopefully other wonderful mothers who go through this will recognize it for what it is, and get help for clinical weaning-related depression, instead of just thinking that it's them, their own life or failure to handle motherhood. I would recommend being slow and careful around weaning, and if you do feel the blues, or a more intense depression, get support and know that you are not the only one who has gone through this. As my lovely friend said, "If I could spare anyone going through what I did, I would for sure want to."

Also I have a huge new respect and humility for people who suffer from depression, and I'll never again secretly think that someone should just "shake it off" or "snap out of it." People are heroes for getting through it. In a way, I'm glad that I went through this because if friends or family or even sweet Toby ever goes through a depression, hopefully I will better understand how they?re feeling and maybe know a few things to say to help them get through it.

What about you? Have you ever experienced depression or anxiety? Was it related to having a baby, a hardship you went through, life in general, or no reason in particular? We really are all in this together. Lots of love to you, as always. xoxo

Wild Geese
You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting?
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.
