Thousands take part in Cary City Swim
Prestonwood sweeps boys? and girls? titles in Cary City swim meet

CARY - This is an Olympic year, and that means many Americans are about to rediscover sports like swimming and track when the quadrennial world event opens later this month in London.If you ever wonder where Olympic-caliber swimmers come from, the annual Cary City Invitational Swim Meet isn?t a bad place to check out.Hannah Moore, who competed last month in the USA swimming Olympic team trials as a rising junior at Green Hope High, is an alumna of the Cary swim meet while competing for the Prestonwood Piranhas. Although Moore didn?t earn a berth on the U.S. team in London, she motivated Prestonwood?s Nicole Webb, who followed Moore?s performance at the trials last month in Omaha, Neb.?We?re all growing up and hoping to be like her,? Webb said of Moore. ?We?re excited she was at the trials and we?re excited about watching the Olympics.?Webb, a rising seventh-grader, was one of the top performers among nearly 3,000 boys and girls who participated in the 31st annual Cary City Invitational Swim Meet on Saturday at Scottish Hills.Webb put on a Michael Phelps-like performance, winning all five events she was limited to entering in the afternoon session for the three older age divisions. She won three gold medals ? 50-yard freestyle, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly ? and swam on two winning relays.Webb also led Prestonwood to sweeps of the girls? and boys? team titles. The Piranhas girls won with 752 points to Olive Chapel?s 680. The Piranhas boys won with 847.5 to Olive Chapel?s 631.5. In the combined team scores, Prestonwood totaled 1,599.5 to Olive Chapel?s 1,311.5.Among the boys in the afternoon session, rising St. David?s senior Ben Mayes of the Cary Silverton Sharks recorded firsts in the 50 freestyle and 50 breaststroke, and a second in the 50 backstroke.Webb won the girls? 11-12 individual point total with 60 points, and Silverton?s Stephen Atkinson won the boys? 11-12 with 55.Cary Swim Club?s Jeremy Schmidt won the boys? 13-14 with 49 points, and The Reserve Stingrays? Sydney Reist won the girls? 13-14 with 56.Mayes won the boys? 15-18 with 57 points, and Silverton?s Christine Kerr won the girls? 15-18 with 56.In the morning session for youths 10 and younger, Scottish Hills? Maria Baric won the girls? 9-10 with 57 points, and Cary Swim Club?s Charlie Keen won the boys? 9-10 with 53.In the girls? 7-8 age group, 7-year-old Claire Curzan of The Reserve Stingrays topped a field primarily made up of 8-year-olds as she won with 60 points. Justin Clark of the Highcroft Hurricanes won the boys? 7-8 title with 60.The girls? and boys? 6-and-under division was limited to two individual events, the 25-yard freestyle and 25 backstroke. Caroline Volk of Sunset Ridge won the girls? with 36 points, and Edward Wu of the Cary Park Sea Dragons won the boys? with 37.
