Fernando Espuelas: Latinos Must Help Unify America - by Voting in 2012

Not that you'd know it by the pie-throwing contest in Washington over the last few weeks, but America is actually not falling apart.

The ideologically pure politicians in the Congress, with their ability and lust to disagree on even such idiocies as to what French fries should be called in the Congressional cafeteria, have resorted to a form of verbal terrorism to describe the nation's state.

We're told that America is one step away from Greek insolvency - a fact-free claim that nevertheless gets amplified through the national media and the Internet echo chamber. China is a few "smart" - and undemocratic - decisions away from replacing the U.S. as the world's super power. Our kids, some of these craven cynics tell us every day, will grow up in a significantly poorer America, poor in opportunities and hope.

What a bunch of dribble.

Yes we face many real, pressing issues that we as a nation must resolve. Everything from public education, to the underfunding of the sciences, to the third-world level of basic national infrastructure, to myriad other issues, the United States has to get to work. We need non-ideological, pragmatic solutions to what are imminently resolvable problems.

Hearing the hysteria coming from Washington, however, you'd think we've become a nation of incompetents. Yet that is not at all what is really happening. The problem is both more simple and much harder to resolve.

While I doubt we've inched up in the collective national wisdom index over the last few weeks, it is also not true that we've lost our inherent capacity to act, to visualize solutions and implement them.

I am constantly bemused by the Tea Party trope that our nation's government is not only the cause of all our problems, but is moreover utterly incompetent in everything is does. The reality is quite different. While Government waste and occasional dopiness is part of the reality, we also enjoy some of the most competently delivered government services of any nation in the world.

And when we look at the pure awesomeness of the U.S. armed forces, with the ability to project power across the globe, some may forget that behind every fighting man and woman there is a vast government apparatus that effectively manages everything from getting rations to the troops to deploying nuclear weapons that underwrite the security of the nation and the world.

Yes, folks, the armed forces are also part of the Government. As are many other essential services that are delivered - invisibly to the vast majority of Americans - in order for the nation as a whole to function and thrive.

But we cannot doubt that America is now facing a crisis of confidence. The Great Recession shook the nation, giving us in late 2008 a terrifying look at the abyss of economic collapse. By the 4th quarter of 2008, as George W. Bush was packing his things in the White House, the economy was shrinking at an annualized 8.9% rate. This is a number that clearly quantifies "economic collapse".

But even in this dark moment, when some of the country's mightiest corporations - AIG, Citigroup, GM- teetered on the verge of demise, our Government took action that kept the nation from collapse. Both under the Bush and Obama administrations, the Government responded with a massive bailout and the country's single largest stimulus program. While both these programs have been swallowed in ideological controversy, there is no doubt that the American economy would have imploded without them.

So while America understandably reels from the screeching puerility that has gripped our capital, we got to get a grip. If the politicians can't pull it together, then the people have to step in. And that is what happened in America across our history, from the Revolutionary War to the War of the Deb Ceiling, Americans, we the people, ultimately must bear the responsibility to make the country work.

As they say, elections have consequences. And 2012 is one of those elections in which we the people will have to step in and save the country from our own dysfunctional, mediocre and unpatriotic leaders - people that over and over again have put forward their personal and political interests ahead of their responsibility to the nation.

But 2012 will be a different kind of election. As the latest U.S. Census has shown, there is a new group of voters in America - a sector of the electorate that has been punching below its weight for decades. Latinos are not just the country's fastest growing segment of the American population, we're also an increasing proportion of the voters. This demographic phenomenon is specially true in several key states that are part of the formula for any Presidential victory.

Of course, Latinos have also been historically terrible voters. We have seen our obligation to the country, our obligation to democracy, in highly ambiguous terms.

While so-called Latinos leaders like Congressman Luis Gutierrez have encouraged Latinos not to vote, in an act of symbolic political suicide, and much of Spanish-language media, dominated by decision makers from Latin America that have a weak grasp on American politics, cheer along at any public protest while failing to drive voter turn-out, America waits for Latinos to take their citizenship responsibilities seriously and vote in large numbers.

In fact, it is estimated that by 2012 there will be some 10 million Americans of Latino descent who can vote - but will have not registered to do so. These 10 million voters could literally decide the future of Congress and who sits in the White House. These voters are the potential lynchpin in any close election - in some states, they could determine the outcome.

While there is a widely held, if ultimately erroneous perception, that Latinos only care about immigration, in fact other issues are of critical import too.

Yes, immigration is important. Not only because of the intrinsic human issues that it deals with, but because anti-immigrant advocates have adopted the sour, racially-charged narrative and imagery of anti-Latino bigotry to push for punitive laws that divide society and are simply not acceptable in a post Jim Crow world. You heard it here first - institutionalized racism will not be making a come back in the United States.

But immigration is not the only issue. Like most Americans, Latinos care about jobs, education, public safety and the general well being of their communities and the country. But for their very low voting rates, they think and behave like all other Americans.

In the roughly 14 months until the 2012 election, Americans of Latino descent, and the over 800 Hispanic-focused organizations that are involved in some form of community activism, should concentrate on a single Big Goal: to register the 10 million Latinos that are today sitting out American democracy.

Latino-Americans can no longer afford to let other people vote for them. We cannot sit back and watch things happen to America, when we have the votes to achieve a better outcome for the nation.

Latinos have the numbers to make a true and lasting change to the political system - and in 2012, America needs us to take action by voting and making the country stronger, more prosperous and still the beacon of opportunity for the world.

Autism runs in families moreso than thought

Kathleen Lanese of Kings Park, N.Y., with her two autistic sons Brendan, 14, left and Kevin, 10. Lanese says having one son with autism didn't make her think twice about trying to have another child. AP Photo by Kathy Kmonicek.

Children who have an older sibling with autism are much more likely to have the disorder than previously thought, according to a study in the journal Pediatrics.

The study, performed at UC Davis? M.I.N.D. Institute, studied 664 babies at 12 sites in the United States and Canada and found that males who had a sibling with autism were 26 percent more likely to develop it by 3. The same was true in 9 percent of girls. Boys tend to develop autism spectrum disorder in higher numbers than girls, for reasons not yet understood.

Overall, 132 babies were diagnosed with autism. ?We were all a bit surprised and taken aback about how high it is,? lead study author Sally Ozonoff, a psychiatry and behavioral sciences professor at the UC Davis institute, told The Associated Press.

According to the L.A. Times? story, researchers have long known that autism runs in families, but estimates on the risk for newborns have been pegged at 3 percent to 10 percent.

A baby who has more than one sibling with autism has an even greater chance of developing the disorder ? 32 percent. ?I have seen families with five kids with autism,? Yale University autism expert Dr. Fred Volkmar told the newspaper.

The researchers said the results shouldn?t alarm parents of autistic children, but that the study is meant to further educate them. TIME.com?s story says parents of an autistic child who want to have more children should work with their pediatricians to ?step up developmental surveillance of future babies.?

More:

?These babies should potentially be treated differently than other infants,? says Ozonoff. At a typical ?well baby? check-up for a healthy infant, doctors often ask general questions such as, How is she doing? For babies who have older siblings with autism, doctors should be more specific, inquiring about eye contact, babbling, smiling at others and playing peek-a-boo ? all developmental milestones whose absence could be worrisome.

If you?re the parent of an autistic child, I?d like to hear your thoughts about this research. Please leave a comment below.

Missing Ohio ballpark statue found at police dept.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) ? A bronze statue of a little girl reported stolen from an Ohio minor league ballpark has been found safe, in a police property room.

The Blade newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/oWjDDj ) two Toledo officers found the statue on the sidewalk early Saturday about 20 yards from its usual spot. Their report says they took it away to protect it.

Sunday evening, the Toledo Mud Hens noticed the statue missing from outside Fifth Third Field and filed a theft report. The city's arts commission was relieved to learn Monday that it was not taken by scrap metal thieves.

The statue is one of four in a piece depicting four life-size children trying to look through knotholes in a ballpark fence. It's not clear why it was unbolted and moved.

Question by Grisel : 6,000K to invest! A first timer? What penny stocks should I look into?
I would like to know more about the market and really don?t have the resources or even know how to play the market. I dont want to loose all 6K for I have been saving for almost a year and finally felt able to take a chunk and invest.

I suggest you stay away from any stupid spam links your question is bound to attract! With that said my advice concerning penny stocks is: ?STAY AS FAR AWAY FROM THEM AS POSSIBLE!? Buying penny stocks is not investing, it?s gambling (with much worse odds than the casinos) 99% of all penny stocks tank and are worthless in no time at all, the magical bumps in price (you know how they advertise 1500% growth, most of the time its caused by the ?buy? recomendation?everyone runs out and buys the worthless stock, causing the price to go from .01 to .15 cents) then as soon as it peaks, the early ?investors? sell off and pocket the profits while most of the other suckers are stuck with worthless paper.

Answer by William M
I?d agree to stay away from penny stocks. They are thinly traded and most are scams. Instead invest into undervalued companies that have been hit bad by the recession, or invest into small-cap stocks with market caps of $ 200 million ? $ 2 billion such as oil or energy with great potential as they have potential to grow if they do well. Look into it and good luck!

I?m heavily invested in penny stocks with about half my portfolio cash, the remainder is in more secure stocks with lower risk values. As of last night (Tuesday) my portfolios reflected an overall gain of 63% year-to-date (from Jan. 4th, 2010). Penny stocks have contributed massively.

Pennies require tireless watching and study for they can be treacherous. After all, investors are human and all the more so when investing earned dollars?so market volatility is a given, to be sure.

Take a look at these:

HDY
JADA
SGAS
CKGT

One of these is a Texas oil and gas exploration company holding the largest and most prospective off-shore lease in all of Africa. Another is the foremost high-quality jade mining company in the world. The other two are companies operating in The Republic of China. None of these companies carries any long term debt, all are on the move?higher, we hope. LOL

To learn more about them, visit:

www.investorvillage.com
www.investorshub.com

Type each ticker symbol into the search box and study all that comes up. Read what investors have to say but take everything with a grain of caution as many will tout their favorites. These are moving right now but I?m hoping you won?t invest in anything until you?re comfortable in the knowledge that you are ready to operate as an investor. These picks may not be appropriate for you when you?re ready to invest. Learn about the market first, that?s key to success.

Tune out the naysayers who caution you against doing as you wish. You want to know what you might look at, you didn?t ask for lessons in living your life or how to manage your wealth. Also, last year during the meltdown in credit markets, I loaded up on Bank of America at $ 4.96/share. That great stock was a penny stock at the time!

I love it when people gang up on penny stocks. Mutual funds lose money, too. The obvious difference is that people can blame their mutuals and the government for failure. When I play penny stocks or any other stocks, my successes and failures all rest on me.

Since you?re concerned you might lose your $ 6,000, why not begin with just part of it? Your results will be slower but at least it will afford you the room to make mistakes without destroying your dream.

Every stock tells a story. Fundamentals point to past results and enable us to evaluate business values but we all know there?s no future in history! Meanwhile, everything will depend upon your ability to add things up. This means grasping the corporate mission, the concept, the business model and plan, the character of management and as important as anything: You?ve got to anticipate how you will react to varying situations. This is so because human impatience and greed and fear work against us. Remaining calm and careful are more important than my words could ever be.

Best of luck to you. I hope you come to love this work as I do. Every day, rain or shine, is a joy when you?ve got some stocks in motion. Each one represents your choices and your dreams.

do you want to lose all your money? if no, then stay away from penny stocks ? that is a very risky gamble ? any stock under $ 5/share is very risky or the stock wouldn?t be priced so low ? the majority of those companies are new and have little revenue and usually are losing money, so it would be insane to risk investing in them ? companies could even be fake and prices could be manipulated to the benefit of insiders and there may be no buyers when you want to sell ? see the movie Boiler Room

Answer by Jim L
Why are you interested in penny stocks? That is a good way to lose a large part of your money fast. Penny stocks are either make a lot of money (maybe 3% of the time) or lose most of it (97% of the time). If you want to do that, play roulette and bet a number on one spin. Basically the same odds.

I would either choose a couple of mutual funds or 2-3 solid long term stocks. If you feel like stocks is the way to go, then you could start with a couple of ETF (those are Exchange Traded Funds, mutual funds that trade like shares of stock) and then switch to single company stocks when you find ones you like.

Here is a link to Vanguard ETFs https://personal.vanguard.com/us/funds/etf/bytype

I would choose one Value ETF (symbol VTV), a small cap (symbol VBK), and an international stock fund (symbol VWO) with emerging market exposure. Look for yourself though, and make your own decision.

Single company stocks right now are hard to pick because many are overvalued. If I had to pick three for the long term, I would try Ford Motor (F), Freeport McMoran (FCX) and something like Kraft (KFT) or Altria (MO) the last two which have pretty nice dividends.

Starbucks CEO urges halt to U.S. political donations (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) Chief Executive Howard Schultz is winning support for his call to withhold political contributions from U.S. lawmakers until they strike a "fair, bipartisan" deal on the country's debt, revenue and spending.

Schultz recently led the world's biggest coffee chain through a painful but successful restructuring that returned it to growth. In his letter on Monday, he also challenged fellow U.S. business leaders to do their part by hiring workers to give the national economy a much-needed jolt.

NYSE Euronext (NYX.N) Chief Executive Duncan Niederauer and Nasdaq OMX (NDAQ.O) Group Chief Executive Robert Greifeld already have pledged their support.

"I think that Howard's idea is a great one, and I have told him that he can count on me," Greifeld wrote in an email to Nasdaq company leaders.

Schultz's effort comes as wealthy business leaders step up to challenge U.S. politicians who put their partisan bickering on display during the recent debt ceiling debate. That performance helped send consumer confidence to a more than three decade low and was cited when Standard & Poor's downgraded the U.S. credit rating.

This weekend, New York Times columnist Joe Nocera wrote a piece about Schultz's call to boycott campaign contributions. The paper followed that up with an editorial in which revered billionaire investor Warren Buffett called for the United States to raise taxes for mega-rich individuals -- including Buffett himself.

"These are two well-respected CEOs and they're on to something," said Todd Morgan, founder and senior managing director of Bel Air Investment Advisors in Los Angeles, whose firm manages money for families with $20 million or more.

"I think you will get other business leaders following their lead to encourage Washington to take some bold steps, which could inspire more confidence in the economy of our country," Morgan said.

In his letter on Monday, Schultz invited executives to join him in a "pledge to withhold any further campaign contributions to the President and all members of Congress until a fair, bipartisan deal is reached that sets our nation on stronger long-term fiscal footing."

Schultz also urged fellow CEOs to invest in projects or new products that will perk up the economy at a time when fear and uncertainty have made businesses unwilling to invest, consumers unwilling to spend and banks unwilling to lend.

"Record levels of cash are piling up in corporate treasuries, idling," he said. "The only way to break this cycle of fear is to break it."

From January through August of this year, Starbucks has hired 36,000 new employees in the United States and Canada, 15 percent more than in the same period a year ago.
