NEW?ORLEANS - New Orleans firefighters spent the night on the scene of a three-alarm fire in the Lower Garden District.

The blaze started just after 11 p.m. Thursday in a home at 1218 Josephine Street, and the New Orleans Fire Department remained on scene until around 6 a.m. Friday.

A man inside the home saw the power go out, stepped into the hallway to investigate and smelled smoke. He immediately evacuated the other occupants safely outside of the home.

First responders initially thought there were children inside the home and went in to check as the fire raged over their heads. Minutes after, a commander indicated that all family members were out, and confirmed that no children lived there.

The rear of the building became unstable and began to shake, and firefighters went into defensive mode.

By midnight, the fire had reached three-alarms, and firefighters observed flames shooting out of the roof and sides of the wood-framed, camel-back home.

By 1:15 a.m., the blaze was under control with the help of 26 units and 59 firefighters.

The structure did not collapse, and a fire-watch with a pump and ladder truck was left stationed on the scene to make sure there were not any flare-ups or hot spots and also to thoroughly inspect the structure on Friday.

No one was injured, but the home was heavily damaged. The residents told Eyewitness News that they lost everything.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

The American Red Cross assisted the homeowners with food, shelter and warm clothes.
