What the election results mean for your wallet

The election results were clear, but the path forward is not. With Washington moving on with essentially the same trilateral team that froze fiscal policy for the last two years, it's not obvious or certain what will happen to taxes, interest rates, markets and the economy under President Barack Obama, the Democrat-controlled Senate and the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

"We still live with uncertainty on this that puts us all in planning-land dilemma," says Greg Rosica, a tax partner with Ernst & Young. That doesn't mean individuals can't start to place some bets. There will be financial effects they can't control and some they can.

Here is what you can expect now, and what you can do about it.

Talk to your broker. Make an appointment with your broker and your tax adviser for the week between Christmas and the new year; don't let them take vacation. If Washington does anything to extend important tax breaks that expired at the end of 2011, like the alternative minimum tax patch, it is likely to finish that work the week before Christmas. That means you don't have to jump now to implement your year-end tax and investment strategy. You just have to plan ahead for what that strategy should be under the extended/not extended alternatives. You'll need to get a sense of whether you'd be hit by the AMT under current law.

Sell winning stocks in taxable accounts. Some of today's sell-off could be prompted by people wanting to lock in low tax rates on gains before they expire at the end of the year. Currently both capital gains and dividends are taxed at a top rate of 15 percent. Absent a new law, gains will be taxed at a maximum rate of 20 percent and dividends will be taxed as ordinary income -- as high as 39.6 percent plus a 3.8 percent Medicare tax for high earners.

That isn't expected. Most observers believe Congress and the White house will preserve low rates for both of those categories, but maybe not as low as they currently are. This year, anyone with taxable income under $35,350 ($70,700 for couples filing jointly) faces a zero percent tax rate on capital gains this year. If you're in that bracket, sell now. In addition to selling those winners you could give some shares to your low-earning young adult kids.

Max out tax-favored retirement contributions. There's no reason to hold off on contributions to individual retirement accounts, Roth IRAs, and 401(k) accounts, even though you have until April 15, 2013, to make 2012 contributions.

Here's why: (1) If you miss a year's contribution you can't make it up in another year; (2) Tea-leaf readers do expect some income tax rates to rise over the next several years, making the tax-favored buildup in those accounts more valuable; (3) An Obama-driven tax reform measure could hurt the tax breaks people get for 401(k)s and other retirement accounts.

The framework-providing Simpson-Bowles deficit-cutting proposal, put forth by Erskine Bowles, Clinton-era chief of staff, and Alan Simpson, former Republican senator, called for elimination of tax deductions for contributions to 401(k) plans and IRAs. Even if a future tax-reform bill doesn't get that extreme, "It's hard to see how those incentives don't get trimmed at least a little bit in a big grand bargain," said Geoff Manville, a principal in Mercer's Washington Resource Group. "They could very well be at risk."

Invest strategically. Some sectors will do better than others under a second Obama administration, says Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ. He has highlighted alternative energy areas, such as hydro, geothermal, wind and solar power, and also, surprisingly, aluminum - it can be produced with lower carbon emissions than steel. He also thinks homebuilders stand to profit from administration efforts to slow or stall foreclosures; fewer homes will come onto the market and more will need to be built. He also believes healthy dividend-paying stocks will hold up well and that taxes on dividends won't revert to punishing pre-Bush era levels. His favorites in a variety of sectors: Darden Restaurants, Atria Group, Chevron, Bank of Nova Scotia, Waste Management, Microsoft and UGI Corp.

Bet on low interest rates now and higher ones later. The Obama victory was widely interpreted as a sign that the Federal Reserve Board has the go-ahead to keep buying bonds and holding short-term rates low for a while; the central bank's stated timetable was at least into 2014. But those same expansionist policies could lead to higher inflation and higher interest rates down the road, as the economy recovers.

That means you still have a window to refinance your mortgage and lock in other low-cost loans. And you don't have to sell your bonds in a big hurry, according to Guy Le Bas, chief fixed income strategist, at Janney Capital Markets. He views the Obama victory as shaving about 0.25 percentage point off bond yields in the near term. Eventually, though, higher rates would harm bond investors.

Expect some consumer protections. Consumer financial advocates and bankers focused on the Senate run of Elizabeth Warren, the consumerist who dreamed up the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and helped establish it. She is already talking about being the Senate's primary watchdog on such issues as banking disclosures and student loans. At the same time, the Obama administration can be expected to revive its stalled efforts to have financial advisers, brokers and retirement plan advisers all face a fiduciary standard -- meaning they would have to put the interest of their clients ahead of their own. "That proposal will come roaring back," says Manville.

Obama focuses on turnout, Romney on Pennsylvania

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) ? Just two days from the finish, President Barack Obama's campaign is mobilizing a massive get-out-the-vote effort aimed at carrying the Democrat to victory, as Republican Mitt Romney makes a late play for votes in Democratic-leaning Pennsylvania.

Obama was closing out the campaign with an apparent edge in some key battleground states, including Ohio. But both campaigns were predicting wins in Tuesday's election.

Romney's campaign was projecting momentum and banking on late-breaking voters to propel him to victory in the exceedingly close race. His political director, Rich Beeson, suggested Sunday that Romney could earn more than 300 electoral votes on Election Day. He needs just 270 to win.

Making his closing case to voters Sunday in Des Moines, Iowa, Romney pledged, if elected, to work with Democrats to restore the American dream and bring the economy roaring back to life.

"We're Americans. We can do anything," Romney said. "The only thing that stands between us and some of the best years we can imagine is a lack of leadership ? and that's why we have elections."

Obama, too, said he is willing to work across party lines to break Washington's gridlock, but assured some 14,000 supporters who gathered in Concord, N.H., he would not compromise key Democratic priorities such as health care and college financial aid.

"I know I look a little bit older, but I've got a lot of fight left in me," Obama said. "We have come too far to turn back now. We have come too far to let our hearts grow faint. It's time to keep pushing forward."

Bridging the partisan divide could be easier said than done for both candidates. Obama has faced hard-nosed opposition from House Republicans during his first term. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has said it's "laughable" for Romney to think Senate Democrats will help pass his agenda.

Romney was cutting away briefly Sunday from the nine or so competitive states that have dominated the candidates' travel itineraries. Romney, along with running mate Paul Ryan, had an early evening event planned in Morrisville, Pa., his first rally in the state this fall.

Romney's visit follows the decision by his campaign and its Republican allies to put millions of dollars in television advertising in Pennsylvania during the race's final weeks. Obama's team followed suit, making a late advertising buy of its own.

"You saw the differences when President Obama and I were side-to-side in our debates," Romney says in a new TV ad filmed at an Ohio rally and released Sunday. "He says it has to be this way. I say it can't stay this way. He's offering excuses. I've got a plan. I can't wait for us to get started."

The campaign did not say where the ad would run.

The Republican ticket cast the late push into Pennsylvania as a sign that Romney had momentum and a chance to pull away states that Obama's campaign assumed it would win handily. The president's team called the move a "Hail Mary" and a sign Romney still doesn't have a clear pathway to reaching 270 Electoral College votes. Democrats have a million-voter registration advantage in Pennsylvania.

"This is a desperate ploy at the end of a campaign," said David Plouffe, a top adviser to Obama's campaign, on ABC's "This Week," arguing that Romney would have to win 2 out of 3 independents to pick up Pennsylvania. "He's not going to do that anywhere, much less Pennsylvania."

The two vice presidential candidates both planned hectic days of campaigning that had them crisscrossing the map. Ryan made a quick stop outside the Green Bay Packers' stadium in his home state of Wisconsin. Donning a Packers jacket and a yellow and green striped tie, Ryan and his family dropped by a tailgating party before setting off for Ohio, Colorado and Minnesota.

Vice President Joe Biden, campaigning in Cleveland suburb of Lakewood, told a crowd of about 1,200 people that Romney and Ryan were trying to fool voters by claiming to be more moderate than they really are.

"These guys are trying to play a con game here at the end," Biden said.

But no one was working harder than the two men at the top of the ticket. In addition to Pennsylvania and Iowa, Romney planned events Sunday in Ohio and Virginia.

Obama had a full schedule, with campaign stops Sunday in New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio and Colorado. He caught a few hours of sleep back at the White House Saturday night before hitting the campaign trail again Sunday. When Marine One lifted off from the South Lawn Sunday morning, it was the last time Obama would see the executive mansion until after Election Day.

Even as he dashed from campaign stop to campaign stop, Obama was careful to avoid the perception he had taken his eye off recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy. As Obama flew Sunday from Washington to New Hampshire, White House spokesman Jay Carney said the president was getting regular updates and would have a full briefing from top officials, including Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who is in New Jersey on Sunday to view storm damage.

Former President Bill Clinton, who has joined Obama on the trail for the waning days of the race, called Obama's handling of the storm a clear example that the president has the right approach to fixing the nation's messes.

"It was a stunning example of 'we're all in this together' is a way better philosophy than 'you're on your own,'" Clinton said as he introduced Obama in Concord.

Both candidates were drawing large crowds as they dropped in and out of the most competitive states. Obama and Clinton drew 24,000 people to an outdoor rally in Bristow, Va., on a cold Saturday night. Romney's Friday night rally in Ohio drew more than 20,000 people.

The president's rallies are aimed at boosting Democratic enthusiasm and motivating as many supporters as possible to cast their votes, either in the final hours of early voting or on Tuesday, Election Day. Persuading undecided voters, now just a tiny sliver of the electorate in battleground states, has become a secondary priority.

Obama's campaign said it had registered 1.8 million voters in key battleground states, nearly double the number of voters they registered in 2008. Campaign officials said volunteers had made 125 million personal phone calls or door knocks with voters.

FitView-Building Muscle : Modestoview

Building Muscle Quickly By Efren Martinez The human body is a remarkable creation; in most cases it can heal itself when it?s sick, mend a broken bone and with the right training can astound us with its remarkable abilities in strength, fitness, endurance as well its muscular beauty that lies within us all. With that said, building muscle mass quickly can easily be achieved with a specific type of workout plan and knowing what to eat and when to eat it. In photo ?A? you see my body structure that resulted in overly eating and drinking all the wrong things with zero exercise. And just as easy as it was to balloon my body to a XXX extra large, it was just as easy to get down to a size small. I achieved this through a disciplined nutrition plan and exercise and in a matter of months I was able to lose all that weight rather quickly back in 2005. During this year of 2012 I often went back and forth in weight sculpting mybody to different forms like in photos ?B? and ?C? depending the season we were in and if I was training for an endurance event. In the winter, when the Triathlon Season is over for me, I like to put on muscle. In photo ?B? I went from 150lbs to 170lbs with 10% body fat. During that time I focused on bodybuilding and zoned in more on weight lifting versus cardio as well as increasing my protein intake verses carbohydrates. By mid winter, I was bench-pressing 250lbs and felt very strong while sporting a waistline of 32 inches. In comparison to photo ?C? I slimmed down to 140lbs with 5% body fat and got down to a 29-inch waistline. I reached both of these goals within a four-month time period and I achieved sculpting my body so quickly with knowing what to eat and when to eat it. Modesto View Readers, to build muscle mass quickly I cut down on my cardio training by 65% and upped my weight training by 40%. In total my weight training secessions lasted much longer then my cardio training secessions and not only did I continually add more repetitions while working on this stronger body structure, but I also increased the weight I was liftingrapidly. The workout equation to achieve this was quite the opposite of my normal endurance training, but it worked very well and I got fast muscular results. But lifting weights was only part of it; the real secret in building muscle fast was the nutrition and knowing what to eat and when to eat it. After my countless studies, I learned that the most beneficial time to build your muscles is within the 2 hours after a hard weight training session. During your weight training secession, your body goes through enormous stress. As you?re lifting weights, your muscles literally will get hot and the small fibers in them began to tear. After your workout, your body begins to rebuild those torn fibers with the nutrition you put into your body. In truth, your body actually hungers for the right food needed to heal itself and rebuild those fibers to get bigger and stronger. Below are a few suggestions of what I ate after my strength training workouts andwhen I ate it. These simple foods worked very for well me and sure, results may very depend on your metabolic rate and body type, but the science is solid, I?m living proof of that. As far as slimming down to a body structure in photo ?C? like I said, I archived both of these body-sculpting goals within a 4-month period. I went from a healthy weight of 150lbs to a 170lbs musclemass body weight then way back down to 140lbs my preferred racing weight and it?s the weight I am currently sporting now. Look for an upcoming issue in your Modesto View (Fit View) in regards to how I was able to lean down to 140lbsfrom 170lbs so quickly. Always consult with your doctor before starting any nutritional diet or exercise program. Below are a few secrets on what I ate; when I ate it as well & some recovery tips. Suggestions of nutrition right after you?re strength-training workout: 30-40 grams of wey protein. 5 grams of creatine. 70-80 grams of dextrose. ?sugar? 5-10 grams of glucosemean. ?optional?

Suggestions of nutrition within the 2 hours after you?re strength-training workout. 1st choice eat a can of tune, 100 grams of rice cakes wash it down with grapefruit juice. Or a 2nd choice would be a 6oz steak, 1 potato single serving of orange juice Note: For bodybuilding, make sure you include protein in every meal of your day. The best sources include eggs, chicken, lean beef, pork, seafood, soy, and low-fat dairy. Carbohydrates are best consumed at breakfast to give you the energy you need to burn off during your day. Recovery Tips: Antioxidant rich foods help reduce inflammation and decrease muscle soreness. One of the easiest ways to get an adequate amount of antioxidants and carbohydrates is by drinking tart cherry juice. Taking an Amino Acid supplement 45 minute prior to a workout helps create the building blocks for building muscle as well as speeds up your recovery. Make sure you stretch out those muscles properly after any workout; studies haveshown it can be more beneficial to do so after verses before. November Fitness Event

12 Ways to Organize Your Book Ideas Before You Start to Write

Organizing a book project before you begin writing helps you succeed. Many WNFIN participants write a nonfiction book in a month?one reason I?ve chosen this year to also call this event National Nonfiction Writing Month (NaNonFiWriMo). So many nonfiction books get written in November in addition to articles, essays, book proposals, and more. To accomplish the task of completing a book in 30 days, however, it?s important to start your book project in an organized manner. I don?t know anyone better at finding creative systems for organizing just about any writing project?including books?than author and book coach Roger C. Parker. That?s why today?s WNFIN?s guest blog post is written by Roger and covers some remarkable ways to organize your book project to increase your chances of completing it before month?s end. NA

To write a nonfiction book as efficiently as possible, you need to start by organizing your ideas.

Starting to write a book without a content plan is an invitation to false starts and wasted effort. It?s as foolish as trying to drive from New Hampshire to San Diego without referring to road map, intending to navigate entirely by intuition. You may end up there, but you may have wasted a lot of time (and gasoline) on unnecessary detours and dead ends.

You don?t have to know exactly what you?re going to write about in each paragraph of every chapter. (To read the rest of this blog post, please click here.)

This post is part of? National Nonfiction Writing Month and the Write Nonfiction in November challenge. To learn more about these events, please visit www.writenonfictioninnovember.com, this blog?s sister blog.

BN Exclusive: First Photos from Tolu Odukoya & Olumide Ijogun's ...

The lovely couple celebrated their traditional engagement just a few days ago (Click HERE for photos) and today, Saturday 3rd November 2012, Tolu Odukoya and Olumide Ijogun were joined together as husband and wife at the Fountain of Life Church in Lagos.?The bride?s father,?Pastor Taiwo Odukoya?is the senior pastor of the church while her mother is the late?Pastor Bimbo Odukoya.

The couple, family and friends have now proceeded to the Haven Events Centre in GRA Ikeja, Lagos for their wedding reception.

In a recent interview with Lanre Odukoya of ThisDay Newspaper, the couple shared their love story. The highschool sweethearts met at the Greensprings secondary school in Lagos;

How Tolu & Olumide Met

?It was quite a magical moment because as I walked into the class I noticed her amongst the rest,? Ijogun recalls.

?It was really a moment that I still cannot express in words. I knew it was a sign and this was a sign from God. I knew I might not have fully recognized it but I couldn?t miss it. If I can express it in words it would be like recalling how the spotlight shines on someone among so many people. I have never felt that way again with someone else.?

For Odukoya, it was an equally memorable occasion. ?It all started for me when he came into Greensprings. Because Olumide is a fine boy, all the girls were all over him. I didn?t want to follow the crowd so I kept my distance and did my own thing. We knew we liked each other but we were kids at that point in time. So, I travelled away to America and came back. Then we started the relationship and we have been together ever since.?

The Proposal

Proposal was nothing dramatic because Ijogun ?is a very simple guy,? Odukoya said with a spark in her eyes. ?I didn?t really expect to see anything crazy because I would have said ?this is not you?. He had travelled back from his MBA graduation. I was asking to see his certificate and he brings out two boxes and he held on to them, and I was thinking it was a bracelet or chain. My husband is very prudent with money; he doesn?t just spend money, so I thought he had gone all out this time to buy me something very expensive.

?But before he brought out the box, he was hugging me and telling me he loves me and he wants to spend the rest of his life with me. Then he turns it to me and there were two rings and he was really sweating and he tells me he loves me and he wants to spend the rest of his life with me and I said ?yes, put the ring on my finger?. It was very simple because that is who he is. It was a precious moment.?

Pre-Marital Counselling from Pastor Bimbo

?The crazy thing is that my mum actually spoke to us in 2005,? Odukoya said. ?She knew we were in a serious relationship. She called us into the church office and we came into the office and we sat down and she said, ?This Tolu you say you like, do you want to marry her?? And he said yes. She said, ?Hmm, this girl, she has problems o. She gets angry. I hope you know the bad part of her?? He said ?Yes, ma, I know?. She spoke to us like we were about to get married in a couple of months.?

And as if on cue, Ijogun adds: ?She said marriage is not a contract but a lifetime commitment.? Another laughter.

?It?s amazing that she did that because people always ask me: ?did your mum meet him?? And I say ?yes, my mother knew him?. She was at first driving him away. She was like ?she is too young, don?t come to the house? because then we were like 13.? His excuse was always that he had come to give her some mathematics lesson.

?Yes, he used to come and teach me some math and my mum would be like ?you people are just joking?. But then by the time we got to SS3 and we started dating. My mother was like ?maybe my approach is wrong, maybe I should let her have a boyfriend but they must meet here in the house?. And then she started asking questions like ?this relationship you guys are having, what do you do and what do you say?? She wanted to be a part of it.

Chastity before Marriage

?It has been hard, it has been very difficult,? she said.

Perhaps sensing some reluctance in his bride to deal with the subject, Ijogun said: ?Hold on, I will handle this. It?s not been easy. It?s either you believe in something you have faith in or you don?t, no one is perfect. We all try to do what we can do, to walk according to the will of God and His purpose so we can receive not just half of His blessings but His full blessings. So, it?s been hard but we?ve pulled through.?

U.S. taps reserves to calm New York, New Jersey fuel "panic" post Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A third day of gasoline "panic buying" among storm-stricken motorists in the New York area and New Jersey prompted authorities to tap emergency oil reserves and ordered the military to dispatch fuel on Friday, while limited deliveries from pipelines and oil barges offered a glimmer of relief.

Four days before the U.S. presidential election, the Obama administration made an all-out effort to ease the crisis, authorizing the Defense Logistics Agency to buy and deliver up to 22 million gallons of fuel for the region, waiving a rule barring foreign-flagged vessels transiting U.S. ports and loaning out diesel from the Northeast heating oil stockpile.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie ordered gasoline rationing starting at noon on Saturday, an action likely to draw comparisons with the 1970s oil crisis.

New York temporarily lifted tax and registration requirements on tankers docking in New York Harbor, which had just reopened to oil vessels. "There should be a real change in conditions and people should see it quickly," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

While the shipping waivers sent benchmark New York gasoline futures 2 percent lower, they will do little to address the immediate obstacle to getting fuel to consumers: power outages that shut two-thirds of the filling stations in New Jersey and the New York City area were still hindering service at oil terminals and refineries in the region.

While the main fuel pipeline from the U.S. Gulf Coast region resumed shipments on Friday and a handful of oil storage terminals began shipping fuel again under generator power, many remained shut. The vast IMTT Bayonne terminal and storage farm, which hosts one-fifth of the harbor's capacity, is due to reopen sometime next week, its co-owner said.

Faced with losing another day of business, William Torrens got up at 5 a.m. in East Rutherford, New Jersey, to queue for fuel. The owner of All Clear Plumbing waited four hours in a six-block line at a Sunoco station before finally getting gasoline for his truck and home generator.

"I haven't seen something like this since I was a kid and there was a gas shortage," Torrens said, adding that the shortage was costing his business money.

"I can't spare a truck to sit for four hours in line. When my guys run out of gas, they're going to have to sit."

In Brooklyn, taxi drivers hunted for fuel. Long lines formed outside even empty stations after rumors spread that they would soon receive fuel deliveries. Officials said the number of cabs on the road by Friday morning was down 24 percent from last week.

By late on Friday, motorist group AAA said that nearly half of all service stations in New Jersey were now open for business, up from 35 to 40 percent earlier in the day, while a smaller number of New York City and Long Island stations had reopened. But the U.S. Energy Information Administration said two-thirds of service stations in the New York City area were still without gasoline for sale.

PRICE GOUGING

Prices at the pump have remained steady despite the shortages, AAA said, averaging just below $4 a gallon in New York City, 2 cents lower than last week. However, on Long Island, where only a third of all stations were working, average gasoline prices jumped 5 cents from a day earlier.

Online, Craigslist users started offering gasoline for as much as $15 a gallon to motorists and homeowners who did not want to brave the lines.

There were some signs that the situation could improve as the complex New York Harbor network of terminals, storage tanks and pipelines was finally returning to service.

Speaking with Governor Cuomo at a press conference, Rear Admiral Daniel Abel of the U.S. Coast Guard said that fuel barges in New York Harbor may be allowed to pump gasoline directly from barges into oil tanker trucks waiting on the dock.

"We're looking at creative alternatives," Abel said. "They (can) hose the fuel directly from the barge to a truck, if they can do that safely."

An oil tanker carrying 2 million gallons of gasoline docked overnight in Newburgh, New York, 60 miles north of Manhattan. Other ships were offloading cargoes in the harbor after being stuck at anchor for the past week.

Colonial Pipeline, a 5,500-mile (8,900-km) network that runs from the Gulf Coast refining center up the eastern seaboard, said late on Thursday that it had resumed fuel deliveries at its facility in Linden, New Jersey, the terminus of the line.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said the U.S. Defense Logistics Agency would buy up to 12 million gallons of gasoline and 10 million gallons of diesel for the area, while the Department of Energy would lend 2 million gallons of diesel to emergency responders in New York and New Jersey, starting as early as Saturday.

The Environmental Protection Agency extended a waiver on clean diesel fuel rules to cover the New York City area and Pennsylvania, allowing them to use higher-sulfur home heating fuel in generators and vehicles. New Jersey received similar relief from the Clean Air Act rules earlier in the week.

SHORT ON POWER AND PATIENCE

The majority of oil terminals around New York Harbor remained shut without power, while some were damaged in the storm. They have gasoline in their storage tanks, but without electricity they cannot move it to tanker trucks for distribution.

Phillips 66 Bayway refinery in New Jersey, known as "the gasoline machine" by oil traders, may be shut for weeks due to flood damage, a source familiar with operations said. The company has said that a decision on when to reopen would be made "once all assessments are complete." A third of the region's refining capacity was shut by the storm.

Terminal operator Buckeye Partners LP said FEMA was helping to bring power generators to terminals. FEMA spokesman Lars Anderson confirmed in a blog post that the agency was "coordinating with states and the private sector to accelerate the distribution of fuel to retail locations."

Those measures offered little comfort to people waiting in long lines with no guarantee that supplies would last until they got to the front of the line or that enough power would be restored to get more stations open.

Juliana Smith, a full-time student, spent 2-1/2 hours in line to fill two five-gallon containers on Friday, an hour more than on Thursday. "It's psychotic," she said. "People are angry. We have no power. No heat. We need gas for the generator and our Ford Explorer, which is a monster."

There was "panic buying" in the region, Hess Corp Chairman and Chief Executive John Hess said on a conference call.

Travel through tunnels and across the three main bridges to Manhattan was down 47 percent on Friday morning, according to data from the Port Authority.

"This is in part due to the gasoline shortages. It's probably also due to people staying home today - they've really had to fight to get where they want to go over the past few days," said New York Department of Transportation spokesman Adam Levine.

Rumors circulated on social media about which sites had gas or were due to get a delivery.

"I heard it on Facebook," said Manuel Ortiz, 33. He was first in the line of more than 60 people waiting with red and orange gasoline canisters at a station in Brooklyn.

Two police officers placed a blue barrier in front of Ortiz, a delivery truck driver who said he had been waiting since 2 a.m. He said a fist fight had broken out when one driver tried to cut in front of another.

"I just want the gas. I don't care how long I have to wait," said Ortiz.

Fieldays get down to global business - Stuff

National Agricultural Fieldays says its 45th event will be themed ''Getting down to business in the global economy'', to showcase New Zealand's unique position as an innovative agribusiness-driven economy that can help feed the world.

The prospectus for the 2013 event at Mystery Creek near Hamilton on June 12-15 has been released with 72 per cent of all agribusiness sites already reserved.

Fieldays chief executive Jon Calder said New Zealand is uniquely placed to capitalise on the growing international demand for food, protein and agricultural expertise.

''We are acknowledged as one of the most innovative, forward thinking agricultural economies in the word. We are excited to be able to provide a platform...for New Zealand agribusiness to showcase its capability and innovation, demonstrating to the New Zealand and the world why we are international leaders in pastoral farming.''

The new Mystery Creek Events Centre headquarters will be completed well before the June event. Calder said six areas have been renovated to improve and increase pedestrian flow, while creating an extra 2000sqm of exhibition space.

The popular Kiwi's Best feature has been renamed Kiwi's Best Kitchen, and doubled in size.

Next year it will feature a beverage section for New Zealand beers, wines and spirits.

The celebrity chef for 2013 has yet to be announced.

The innovation centre has been developed into a bigger greenhouse for local innovations, creating a way for inventors to take the next step to international exporting.

''This fits with the premier feature global theme and the Government's initiative to increase the contribution of exports to the economy from 30 per cent to 40 per cent of GDP by 2025,'' said Calder.

New relationships with organisations in China and India will create fresh opportunities for exhibitors and innovation entrants, he said. The prospectus can be downloaded from www.fieldays.co.nz and site allocation will start from December 1.

Is Climate Change Responsible For Sandy?

To what extent was climate change behind the formation of the superstorm Sandy? Did it make the storm worse than it otherwise would have been? Robert Siegel puts these questions to Martin Hoerling, research meteorologist at NOAA's Earth Systems Laboratory.
