Militant dies in Israel air strike

An Israeli air strike has killed a Palestinian militant preparing to launch rockets at Israel from the Gaza Strip, the military said.

The Palestinian was named as Muaman Abu-Daf, 21, by Gaza officials. One other Palestinian was injured.

The Israeli military said Abu-Daf was a senior operative in a small cell which supports global jihad. The group was responsible for laying explosives near the Gaza-Israel border and helping plan an attempted attack on the Israel-Egypt border this week, according to the military.

The targeted group also recently fired rockets at Israel, they said.

The killed militant's family said he had been a member of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, affiliated with the Fatah party of West Bank-based Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

Abu-Daf's body was displayed at a Gaza City mosque for Friday prayers, wrapped in a yellow Fatah flag.

Earlier this week, Israel carried out air strikes in Gaza, targeting militants it said were involved in the attempted attack on the Israel-Egypt border.

Authorities say 8 dead in Texas vehicle crash (AP)

ANNONA, Texas ? Texas authorities say eight people, including a mother and her three children, have been killed in a fiery, two-vehicle crash in Texas.

Trooper Sylvia Jennings with the Texas Department of Public Safety says a car traveling eastbound on U.S. 82 in Annona in East Texas crossed the center line and struck a westbound car driven by Sonia de la Torre of Annona. She and her 8-year-old daughter Erica, 6-year-old son Saul Jr. and 10-month-old son Eric all died.

Eric Wright and Curtis Derelle Sanders of Compton, Calif., who were in the eastbound car, were also killed. Two other people in their car also died.

Authorities say a passer-by discovered the cars in flames. Jennings says there were no witnesses.

Annona is about 150 miles northeast of Dallas.

Mom of Iran detainee questions alleged confession

(AP) ? The mother of an Iranian-American detained in Iran for four months on espionage charges says his alleged confession was made under duress.

Behnaz Hekmati says her son, Amir, a former U.S. military translator, was in Iran to visit his two grandmothers and that the charges against him make no sense.

Iranian prosecutors say Hekmati was working for the CIA. He could face the death penalty if convicted.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press on Wednesday, Behnaz Hekmati appealed to Iranian authorities to treat him fairly and provide him due process.

"It is clear to me and our entire family that Amir is speaking under duress," she said.

"The statement from the courts that Amir planned on permanently leaving the United States to reside in Iran is totally false. It is an indication that he is not speaking freely but being forced to say something that isn't true."

Behnaz Hekmati said her son has financial and business investments in the U.S. and "would never walk away from them."

"In this environment Amir is a victim. We are convinced that there is a mistake or misunderstanding," she said. "We pray and hope he will be allowed to come home soon."

The State Department has called for Hekmati's release and said on Wednesday that it was still waiting for Iranian authorities to grant Swiss diplomats access to him in prison.

Spokesman Mark Toner said the Swiss, who represent U.S. interests in Iran, have been denied access to Hekmati three times. Hekmati has been detained since August.

Test poised for tight finish as India, Australia share honours on day three

The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

December 28, 2011 - Melbourne

The Boxing Day Test is poised for a razor edge finish after Ricky Ponting and Mike Hussey today salvaged an Australian innings that was on the brink of collapse and led their team's fight back against India on day three.

On an extraordinary, 15 wickets fell for 247 runs with India first collapsing as swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus validated his return to the team with career best figures of 5/75, then the Australians followed with a collapse of their own before Ponting and Hussey combined to help return the match to even terms.

Australia has so far made 8/179, having an overall lead of 230 runs, The Age reports.

Hilfenhaus' call back to the Australian Test team was complete when he skittled the Indian batting and helped deliver Australia a vital 51 run first innings lead.

But that was only the first act in an absorbing day's play. Within moments of the Australians confidently beginning its second innings they were once more in peril, sinking to 4/27.

In the event Ponting and Hussey held together for a pugnacious 115 run partnership to ensure that Australia would not be swept aside and would remain fiercely in this test match.

The Loose Moose sits firmly atop the roof of the 1996 Toyota Carina as Ilya Pinassi and Jeff Urquhart sip overpriced coffees at a bar aboard their ferry.

They?re crossing from the southern tip of Spain with the moose as their mascot. They will get their first taste of North Africa when the boat arrives in Morocco.

It?s here that their journey will really begin. They?re putting their own spin on the Banjul Challenge, a three-week, 6,000-kilometre trek from Plymouth, England, to Banjul, Gambia, in Western Africa.

Pinassi, the general manager of the Upper James Toyota, has dubbed the trip the Race for Grace. The car costs less than a grand, and the pair is trying to raise $25,000 for the Juravinski Cancer Centre in honour of Grace Carr, a longtime employee of the dealership who died from breast cancer in 2006.

They left Hamilton Dec. 7 and have slowly made their way into Africa after logging some 3,000 kilometres from their starting point. They?ve blogged about their journey throughout, from their Dec. 8 start when they picked up the right-seat drive Toyota in England to their foray into Africa.

In their last post to raceforgrace.ca on Dec. 27, 19 days into their journey, Pinassi and Urquhart, a longtime mechanic at the dealership, had made it to Marrakesh, some 650 kilometres from the northern tip of Africa.

They entered the country in a sea of confusion and disorder, fighting through lines that don?t exist as hundreds try to grab the attention of people at three wickets selling car insurance for Africa. As it turns out, most European insurance providers don?t cover the African part of their journey, and Pinassi and Urquhart soon find out it?s a case of survival of the fittest.

They?ve added a third to their car, a man named Dennis whom they?ve nicknamed the Grey-Ace. It?s another driver, and another person to split costs, blogs Pinassi. By the evening of Dec. 21, the car enters Rabat, a Moroccan city that would appear lawless by the style of driving.

By now, the GPS has been thrown into the glove compartment in frustration, questioning its accuracy, and the trio has spent a fair amount of time dealing with paperwork as they prepare visas for the next most southern country, Mauritania.

The Banjul Challenge is not so much a race as it is a journey. A two-day trek through the Sahara Desert is billed as a highlight, and cars are encouraged to travel in convoys.

Pinassi and Urquhart?s convoy is down to three as they climb the mountains around Marrakesh. A protest blocks their route and the locals deny any knowledge of an alternate. It?s Christmas Day and they?re being told their car windows will be smashed if the forge ahead.

They grab kebabs and drive around for an hour before they find another route. Pinassi blogs how great it was to find the new road and how they find a small apartment to rest on Christmas Day in Marrakesh, which he describes as the old seat of power in Morocco.

The blogs are two days behind, with his last posting on Dec. 27. They?ve raised $14,025 so far from 73 separate donors. It?s more than halfway to their goal and the pair has some 4,000 kilometres left in their journey.

You can follow their blog and make a donation at raceforgrace.ca. Pinassi has been tweeting the blog updates under the twitter handle @UpJamesToyota.

MADALLA. December 27. KAZINFORM?At a Nigerian Catholic church where a terror attack killed 35 people on Christmas, women tried to clean the sanctuary ahead of Mass on Monday while one man wept uncontrollably amid the debris; Kazinform refers to Arab News.

Outside the St. Theresa Catholic Church, crowds gathered among the burned-out cars in the dirt parking lot, angry over the attack claimed by a radical sect and fearful that the group will target more churches.

Rev. Father Christopher Jataudarde told The Associated Press that Sunday's blast happened as church officials gave parishioners white powder as part of a tradition celebrating the birth of Christ.

Some already had left the church at the time of the bombing, causing the massive casualties. In the chaos after the bombing, Jataudarde said one mortally wounded man, cradling his shredded stomach, begged him for religious atonement.

"Father, pray for me, I will not survive," the man said, according to the priest.

At least 52 people were wounded in the attack, said Slaku Luguard, a coordinator with Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency. Victims filled the cement floors of a nearby government hospital, some crying in pools of their own blood.

On Christmas, attacks by the radical sect Boko Haram left 39 dead across Africa's most populous nation. A bomb also exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast.

After the bombings, a Boko Haram spokesman using the nom de guerre Abul-Qaqa claimed responsibility for the attacks in an interview with The Daily Trust, the newspaper of record across Nigeria's Muslim north. The sect has used the newspaper in the past to communicate with public.

"There will never be peace until our demands are met," the newspaper quoted the spokesman as saying. "We want all our brothers who have been incarcerated to be released; we want full implementation of the Shariah system and we want democracy and the constitution to be suspended"; Kazinform cites Arab News.

Cheryl Ladd Opens Up About Skin Cancer Battle - Starpulse.com

Cheryl LaddFormer Charlie's Angels star Cheryl Ladd has undergone minor surgery to remove skin cancer spots caused by her love of the beach.

The actress, who replaced Farrah Fawcett on the hit show, is a health nut who eats carefully and has regular check-ups - but her sun-worshiping past recently caught up with her.

She tells WellBella magazine, "I'm very careful in the sunshine. At this age I've had already - because of my love of the sun and beach - a few small skin cancers removed."

And she's also battling the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, which plagues her mom.

Ladd adds, "She's a strong woman and doing the best she can with that terrible disease. She still has this amazing spirit and joy... For myself, I try to do low-impacts (work-outs) as much as possible so I really take care of all of my joints. I get tested all the time to make sure that genetic trigger hasn't happened to me, which it could, I think, in my 60s."

Texas-El Paso (5-6) vs. Auburn (8-2) (ET)

GAME NOTES: The Texas-El Paso Miners and the Auburn Tigers will face off in the third-place game of the Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

The game represents just the third meeting between the Miners and Tigers, and the former has won both previous meetings, the last one taking place back in 1986.

UTEP will be playing its fifth game in nine days and enters with a 5-6 overall record. The Miners beat Clemson in the opening round of this tournament before losing to Kansas State, 78-70, its last time out. UTEP led in the second half of that semifinal-round matchup before the Wildcats staged a late comeback to end the Miners' modest three-game win streak. Coach Tim Floyd's preaches sound defense to his squad, and it has responded by holding its previous seven opponents under 70 points.

Jacques Streeter scored a season-high 15 points, including 11 in the second half, to lead the Miners against Kansas State. UTEP has shot 48.8 percent from the field in its two Diamond Head Classic games, while foes have made 38.3 percent of their field goals. Michael Perez has scored in double figures in six of the seven games, averaging 16.6 ppg during the stretch. He tallied a career-high 25 points versus Clemson on Thursday, and Perez is the only Miner to score in double figures in both Diamond Head Classic games. Cedrick Lang has reached double figures in two of the last three outings, and he tied his career-high with 12 points on Friday.

Auburn enters this contest with an 8-2 record after dropping a 64-43 decision to Long Beach State on Friday. The loss snapped a four-game win streak as the Tigers reeled off victories over South Florida, North Florida, Florida A&M and Hawaii before the 49ers knocked them off. LBSU held Auburn to a season-low 26.3 percent shooting from the field and a season-low 43 points. Coach Tony Barbee's team will try to bounce back closer to its season averages of 68.1 ppg and 44.8 percent shooting.

Frankie Sullivan was the lone bright spot for the Tigers in their last outing, as he finished with 22 points and six rebounds. Rob Chubb, Kenny Gabriel and Chris Denson, all of whom own double-digit scoring averages for the season, will need to step up against UTEP to help their team avoid its first two-game losing streak of the year.

The Tigers should be able to recover from their poor outing and get back on track against the Miners. UTEP has been playing well lately, but its rebounding ability is inferior to its counterpart in this one.

Dealing With Cancer During the Holidays

The holiday season can seem stressful, but Saint Francis Medical Center counselors say it can place an even heavier burden on people going through cancer treatments.

Claudia Krueger's battle with breast cancer began in August of 2011.

"I've been through mastectomy, with stage one reconstruction," Krueger says. "Now I'm starting on my chemo."

She says those treatments, which she receives every other week, have strong and lasting effects.

"The third day after chemo is usually your rough day," Krueger says. "These drugs can cause a lot of muscle ache and pain. You just feel very, very achey and tired."

Saint Francis Cancer Center Family and Patient Counselor Mary Ann Kalinay says can make the already hectic Christmas season even more stressful.

"People, when they're going through treatments, fatigue is the most common side effect," Kalinay says.

She says that often makes it hard for cancer patients and their families to maintain their Christmas traditions.

Krueger says she's cut back on her Christmas decorations for this year.

"It's really important to have a plan and visit with your family about what we might do different this year," Kalinay says.

She says it's also important to leave room for adjustments in the holiday schedule.

"People who are going through treatments, most of the time they don't know on a day to day basis how they're going to feel," Kalinay says.

Through that unpredictability, she says the most important thing to focus on is the love and support of family and friends. And Krueger says that's just what she's experienced.

"Everyone is more than happy to help you when you need it," Krueger says.

She says that support has meant more to her than any amount of Christmas decorations or gifts.

Missing AZ girl believed killed, dumped in trash

(AP Photo/Glendale Police Department, File)

(AP) ? Police said Wednesday they now believe a 5-year-old Arizona girl missing for more than two months was killed and that her body was dumped in a trash bin across town.

That's the most substantive information that police in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale have released about what they believe happened to Jhessye Shockley, who was reported missing Oct. 11.

Police didn't specify who they think killed the little girl.

A month ago, detectives arrested Jhessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, on a child abuse charge related to the girl and announced at the time that they didn't believe they'd find her alive.

Hunter was released days after her Nov. 21 arrest when prosecutors said they wanted further investigation. She has maintained she had nothing to do with her daughter's disappearance, and has been critical of investigators.

Police say Hunter has declined to submit to a lie-detector test.

Jhessye was last seen at her family's apartment in the Phoenix suburb of Glendale after Hunter said she went out for an errand and left the girl in the care of three older siblings

Police previously said they don't believe they will find the child alive.

According to court documents released last month, Jhessye's teenage sister told police that Hunter had instructed her to lie about the disappearance. She also said her mother kept Jhessye in a closet, and that the girl had cuts, black eyes and other bruises before she was reported missing.

Child welfare workers removed Hunter's other children, including a newborn, from her apartment in October but declined to say why.

Hunter came under scrutiny during the investigation for an October 2005 arrest with her then-husband, George Shockley, on child abuse charges in California. Hunter pleaded no contest to corporal punishment and served about four years in prison before she was released on parole in May 2010.

Hunter's oldest child, 14 at the time, has told police his mother routinely beat the children. George Shockley is a convicted sex offender and is still in a California prison.

Walmart's 2010 Black Friday and Getting Your XBox Kinect (ContributorNetwork)

If you are looking to get an XBox with Kinect on Black Friday at Wal-Mart, you may find yourself out of luck, if the retailer is offering a big discount on the game system. Here are some Black Friday hunting tips to help you find that Kinect at Wal-Mart.

1. Check a regional map of all the Wal-Marts in your area

You can use Yahoo Maps or Google Maps and type in Wal-Mart. There will pop up all the Wal-Marts in your area. Immediately eliminate all the Wal-Marts in the more densely populated areas. You want to head to Wal-Marts that out of the way. When the Wii was hot in demand last year, it was the Wal-Marts out in "cow country" that had the hard to find game system in stock.

2. Talk to employees and managers

Go to those far flung Wal-Marts a few days before Black Friday and ask them about the Kinect. If they have the system in stock and when it will be stocked for Black Friday. Chances are you can get an exact time when the systems will be in stock and you can be first-in-line to get the system.

3. Check online at Walmart.com

Walmart will also have most of their inventory for sale online. The Kinect may or may not be in-stock. However, you should check with the site to see if you can get your Kinect online as opposed to the store.

4. Split up

If you have relatives or friends that can go with you on Black Friday, split up. Go to one out-of-the-way Wal-Mart and have your friend or family member go to the other location. By dividing up, you double the chances of getting finding the Kinect in stock.

5. Talk to a relative or friend in a rural area

Let's say you live in Los Angeles or in the New York metro area, chances are, all the Wal-Marts will be out of the Kinect. However, if you have a friend or family member in rural Missouri, they may live close to a Wal-Mart that is stocked with the Kinect. It's a good idea to get in touch with these family members to help you find out if those rural Wal-mArts have the game system in stock.

if the Kniect is on sale, at Wal-Mart, for Black Friday, there is almost certainly going to be a shortage of the game system. The key to getting the game will be to head to Wal-Marts that are in the less populated areas in your area. It will also help if you and your friends and family divide up and check several Wal-Mart locations.

Cholesterol-lowering drugs may reduce mortality for influenza patients

ScienceDaily (Dec. 16, 2011) ? Statins, traditionally known as cholesterol-lowering drugs, may reduce mortality among patients hospitalized with influenza, according to a new study released online by The Journal of Infectious Diseases.

It is the first published observational study to evaluate the relationship between statin use and mortality in hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza virus infection, according to Vanderbilt's William Schaffner, M.D., professor and chair of Preventive Medicine.

"We may be able to combine statins with antiviral drugs to provide better treatment for patients seriously ill with influenza," said Schaffner, who co-authored the study led by Meredith Vandermeer, MPH, of the Oregon Public Health Division.

Researchers studied adults who were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza from 2007-2008 to evaluate the association between patients who were prescribed statins and influenza-related deaths.

Among 3,043 hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza, 33 percent were given statin medications prior to or during hospitalization. After adjusting for various factors, researchers found that patients not receiving statins were almost twice as likely to die from influenza as those who received the medication.

Schaffner stressed that receiving the influenza vaccine each year is still the best defense against influenza. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that between 5 percent and 20 percent of U.S. residents get the flu each year, and more than 20,000 persons are hospitalized for flu-related complications.

Man wanted in slaying found dead; kids safe

Police say the New Jersey man wanted for questioning in the murder of his ex-wife has apparently committed suicide in an upstate New York motel and his two young daughters are safe.

New York State Police say they found Anthony Trapp dead on a bed in his room at the Bear Mountain Bridge Motel in Fort Montgomery about an hour after the girls came out of the room on their own around 7:30 a.m. Friday.

New York police wouldn't say how Trapp died, but New Jersey authorities say he apparently killed himself.

Trapp's ex-wife, Heather, 37 was found dead in his Old Bridge Township home Thursday.

NBC New York reported that relatives of the girls' mother were on their way to join the children at a nearby hospital.

Old Bridge Police Capt. Robert Weiss said the girls came out of the room unharmed, the station said.

Nieghbors descibed the couple as troubled. "They were definitely having their problems," neighbor Anthony Dalessio told the New Jersey Star-Ledger. "Nobody was better than she was. She would do anything for her children. Thank God the children are safe and now we have to grieve for one of our best friends. This is just awful."

"I didn't know them well but they were very nice," said Lisa Graziado, another neighbor. "They seemed like a very nice family."

Film details Jerry Lewis' 'Method to the Madness' (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? Gregg Barson is a documentarian, not a comedian. But when Jerry Lewis let him know that more than a dozen people were waiting in line to tell his story, Barson offered a persuasive punch line.

"Yeah, but they're not me," was Barson's comeback, followed by a momentary quiver of fear that he'd gone too far with the veteran star.

"He said, `I like that. You know why? Because you remind me of me,'" Barson recalled. That chutzpah-fueled exchange led to "Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis," debuting 8 p.m. EST Saturday on Encore. Other airings include 11:30 a.m. EST Sunday and 8 p.m. EST Tuesday.

The film focuses on what makes the 85-year-old ? and still working ? Lewis tick as a performer and filmmaker. Those looking for dish on his family life or breakup with stage and screen partner Dean Martin or abrupt departure from the Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon he'd nurtured for nearly five decades won't find it here.

Barson, who describes himself as being "in heaven" whenever he caught a Lewis film on TV as a youngster, said his intent was to focus on Lewis' career from vaudeville on and his contributions to comedy and movies.

Younger people without exposure to Lewis' work likely consider him as "that telethon guy. Hopefully, the film will open their eyes as opposed to thinking he did one thing one day a year," Barson said.

During more than three years of filming, Barson had near-complete access as he followed Lewis from his yacht in San Diego to his home in Las Vegas to concert dates and to the Cannes Film Festival in France, the country that idolizes Lewis as a cinematic genius.

He was good company, Barson said. "He's always up, funny and playful. ... The sparkle, he didn't put in on for the camera. He's being real."

"Method to the Madness," which opens with Jerry Seinfeld, Eddie Murphy and other comedians anointing Lewis as comedy royalty, is an unabashed valentine. It is also a reminder that Lewis inspired rock-star levels of fan devotion, and of how impressively "The Bellboy" (1960) and many other films starring and written and directed by Lewis ruled the box office.

Barson, who made the well-received Phyllis Diller documentary "Goodnight, We Love You," sees parallels between Diller and Lewis, including their work ethic.

"She was 84 when she retired, and he's 85 and still working. They never rest on their laurels," Barson said. "They still care. They're not phoning it in."

And that, he said, is part of Lewis' method: Every aspect of his performance is planned.

"As Eddie Murphy says (in the film), slapstick looks simple but the reason it's been around so long is how well thought out it is," Barson said.

Lewis is pleased with the film. And his health is good, according to the filmmaker, who spills one appropriately quirky personal secret on his subject: "He drinks a lot of orange soda. Maybe that's the fountain of youth."

Facebook Timeline FAQ: You've got questions, we've got answers (Digital Trends)

introducing timeline

With all the hype surrounding the much-anticipated Facebook media and music integration, the social network was able to slip one feature by us, something we didn?t see coming at all: The Timeline. The new application takes everything you?ve ever done on Facebook and creates a digital scrapbook that is simultaneously eye-pleasing and addicting.

Now, after months of ?beta testing,? Timeline has officially launched, and it?s time for all of us to get acquainted. Perusing your own Facebook history is one thing (and something that after our initial hands-on with Timeline, we can vouch for its tendency to make you compulsively comb over your own), but Timeline also gives you the ability to see your friends entire lives ? or at least what they?ve put on the social networking site. This, of course, raises more than a few questions about privacy. We?ve compiled some top questions below, along with the best information we have so far.

Q: If I posted something with custom privacy settings (i.e., a photo album only my Close Friends list can see or a status update I hid from co-workers), will those carry over to Timeline?

customA: Immediately after hearing about Timeline, our privacy concerns were piqued and we wanted to know if all the Lists and settings we?d spent time curating would be effective. A Facebook PR rep explained to us: ?For every post there is an inline control beside it that shows you who can see it and gives you the option of changing it.? It seemed like a huge boundary for Facebook to overstep were it to ignore and your privacy requests with it came to Timeline, but it never hurts to ask.

Be aware, however, that this means old posts aren?t privy to your new rules. If you made it custom that only friends and not friends of friends could see your status updates last year, then all status updates before that are public.

Q: Is there an easy fix to making past (as in, pre-Lists or Groups) posts private?

A: There is a fix, but we wouldn?t call it easy. Our second thought when we heard about Timeline was how the original Facebook generation was going to have some digging to do. Remember when Facebook was exclusive to college students only? There were no parents, teachers, bosses, aunts, uncles, potential bosses? etc. It was just students and their equally young and impressionable cohorts. And not only were we in a relatively immature environment, we also were part of this early experiment called social networking. Nobody knew exactly what it was or what it did ? or what it had the potential to do.

Now we know that your Facebook profile says more about you than where you go to school and what you did last weekend, and that it?s broadcasting all that to a wide variety of people. So now we?re much more careful about what we post and creating privacy filters. But we didn?t use to be. Before Timeline, finding past discrepancies meant you had to seriously investigate a person?s profile. But infinite scrolling and the ability to quickly access the information from the year toggle makes this? well, infinitely easier.

So if there are any drunken photos or exes you don?t care to remember in your past, you need to manually go through and re-set the privacy options or remove those details from Timeline. The inline controls themselves are very easy to use, but it?s something of a painstaking process to do this. Which is why we suggest getting the Timeline function early if there?s anything you want buried. Remember how people reacted when Photo memories launched? Everyone freaked out at the thought of ?seeing a picture of their boyfriends and girlfriends with their old exes. Others were less bothered, but perfectly fine forgetting how bad that haircut from freshman year was. Some things should remain in the past. Buried deep, deep within Facebook. As with many Facebook updates, there can be a creepy factor, and Timeline puts it front and center.

Q: What about my old Facebook profile?

A: Kiss it goodbye. Facebook is well aware of user outrage over new profiles. As CEO Mark Zuckerberg aptly put it yesterday, people feel an ?intense ownership? over their profiles. We?ve spent more time than we should turning this thing into an accurate and hopefully positive portrayal of ourselves, and when Facebook changes everything, users get mad. So words were chosen very carefully during the announcement of Timeline yesterday and it wasn?t made explicitly clear that Timeline would replace the traditional profile.

But that?s exactly what it will do. ?Once you switch over to Timeline, you cannot go back to your previous profile,? we were told.

Timeline is a new way of looking at Facebook, but that doesn?t mean it?s bad. It has a gorgeous layout, and as with all things, navigating the profile takes a few tries but comes easily enough. Finding information ? for better or worse ? is extremely simple, and it?s a more personal way of connecting with your friends. It is, like everyone is saying, a digital scrapbook of your life.

timeline

Q: How do Facebook?s new Open Graph and class of apps play into Timeline?

A: Timeline is going to be the profile and it?s going to revolve around apps, giving them a lot more prominence than they used to have. Facebook?s goal is for people to start using apps to not only access content (like music, TV shows, and movies) but to fill out their profiles (is that a dirty word now?). The new slew of lifestyle apps are meant to show what you do in the real world: What you read, eat, do for fun, do for exercise, etc.

The benefits: You?ll have documentation of what you?ve done over time. How you?ve progressed (or regressed), new things you?ve tried, and you?ll also be able to discover what your friends are doing in this regard and track your activities along with them. It?s sort of a bridge between documenting your real and digital lives.

Of course, this means that marketers everywhere are rubbing their hands together in glee. Zuckerberg talked yesterday about how apps are going to be a ?frictionless? experience and instead of being prompted to share your app activity each time you use it or achieve something within it, you will be asked once. Of course, this leaves a lot of room for apps to share things you don?t intend them to share. Director of communications for Privacy Rights Clearinghouse Amber Yoo explains why even though fewer prompts from Facebook might be less obnoxious, it isn?t always in users? favor.

?Apps are Facebook?s biggest privacy weakness and we?ve been concerned about how they ask for more data than they need. So taking away the granular control, you know ? asking each time ?do you want to share this?? is a negative,? she says. ?They?re basically changing it from an opt-in to share something to an opt-out, and that?s a negative.?

She also notes this might result in a UI update. ?I?d be interested in seeing how the app permission screen changes.?

The way Open Graph, Timeline, and these new apps work together will result in more and better user data (if everything goes according to plan). Search Engine Journal explains:

music app spotify? With the help of Graph Targeting and the better dataset, marketers will be able to deliver specific marketing messages to the optimum target market. Until now, marketers had to rely on Facebook users either checking in at a location or clicking ?Like? in order to create a ?Sponsored Story.? The Open Graph will now provide advertisers with many more opportunities to create ?Sponsored Stories? through a variety of actions including [but not limited to]; online purchases, playing a song, or watching a movie. ?Sponsored Stories,? which convert at much higher rates than traditional Internet advertising, place a friend?s endorsement on a product or service.?

Facebook says the official Timeline rollout is going to be very incremental, so don?t expect to wake up tomorrow with the next evolution of the profile. That said, you either have to get on board or bail completely, because Timeline is coming.

Broken leg for Villa

David Villa

updated 12:38 p.m. ET Dec. 15, 2011

YOKOHAMA, Japan - David Villa broke his left leg, marring Barcelona's 4-0 victory over Qatar's Al-Sadd on Thursday night that advanced the European champions to the Club World Cup final against Brazil's Santos.

Villa was vying with two defenders in the 37th minute when he landed awkwardly. He fell to the ground, called for help and was carried off on a stretcher. The team said he had a broken shin bone, will return to Spain for surgery and will be sidelined for four to five months.

"Missing him in the team is going to be a blow," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said. "I understand it is going to be a long time. We all love David. His personality is great. We all worry about him."

Villa is Spain's career scorer leader, and it's not clear whether he will return in time for the European Championship. Trying to repeat as champion, Spain opens against Italy on June 10.

"There are six months to go. Let's see if he can get well," Spain coach Vicente del Bosque was quoted as saying by Spanish news agency Europa Press. "There are some players that get healthy sooner than others."

The 30-year-old forward has nine goals for Barcelona this season, his playing time diminishing following the acquisition of Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez.

Barcelona, the 2009 world champion, advanced to Sunday's final against Brazil's Santos. Making six changes from the starting lineup that won 3-1 at Real Madrid on Saturday, Barcelona had some unlikely scorers: Adriano had two goals in the first half, and Seydou Keita and Maxwell had one each in the second.

Adriano put Barcelona in the lead in the 25th minute after goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr failed to hold a tap back from Nadir Belhadj following a cross by Pedro Rodriguez. Adriano then made it 2-0 in the 43rd with a left-footed shot from just inside the penalty area.

Lionel Messi set up Barcelona's third goal in the 64th with a perfect pass to Keita, who finished with a flick, and Maxwell scored in the 81st with an angled left-footed shot that deflected in off Saqr's leg.

Coming in, Adriano had scored just twice since joining Barcelona in July 2010: on Feb. 2 at Almeria in 3-0 Copa del Rey win and on Oct. 2 in 1-0 league win at Sporting Gijon.

Maxwell scored his first goal since Dec. 14, 2008, for Inter Milan against Chievo Verona, while Keita hadn't scored since May 11 against Levante.

(AP) ? Police in Indonesia's most conservative province stripped away body piercings and buzzed off spiky mohawks from 65 youths detained at a punk-rock concert because of their perceived threats to Islamic values.

The teens and young men were also stripped of dog-collar necklaces and chains and then thrown in pools of water for "spiritual" cleansing, local police chief Iskandar Hasan said Wednesday.

After replacing their "disgusting" clothes, he handed each a toothbrush and barked "use it."

It was the latest effort by authorities to promote strict moral values in Aceh, the only province in this secular but predominantly Muslim nation of 240 million people to have imposed Islamic laws.

Here, adultery is punishable by stoning to death. Homosexuals have been thrown in jail or lashed in public with rattan canes. Women are told, wearing headscarves is a must, but please, no tight pants.

Punk rockers have complained for months about harassment, but Saturday's roundup at a concert attended by more than 100 people was by far the most dramatic.

Baton-wielding police broke up the concert, scattering young music lovers, many of whom had traveled from other parts of the sprawling archipelagic nation.

Dozens were loaded into vans and brought to a police detention center in the hills, 30 miles (60 kilometers) from the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, for rehabilitation, training in military-style discipline and religious classes, including Quran recitation.

They will be held there for at least 10 days, after which they'll be returned to their parents.

Twenty-year-old punker, Fauzan, was mortified.

"Why? Why my hair?!" he said, pointing to his cleanly shaven head. "We didn't hurt anyone. This is how we've chosen to express ourselves. Why are they treating us like criminals?"

Hasan insisted he'd done nothing wrong.

"We're not torturing anyone," he said. "We're not violating human rights. We're just trying to put them back on the right moral path."

However, Nur Kholis, a national human commissioner, deplores the detention, saying police have to explain what kinds of criminal laws violated by the youngsters.

"Otherwise, they violated people's right of gathering and expression," Kholis said and promised to investigate it.

Aceh was given semi-autonomy as part of a peace deal with Indonesia's central government after the province agreed to end a separatist struggle in 2005.

Indonesia's 200 million Muslims practice a moderate form of the faith, but bans on drinking alcohol, gambling and kissing in public, among other activities, have been enforced by some more conservative local governments in recent years.

India wants websites to screen derogatory content

(AP) ? India's top telecommunications official said Tuesday that Internet giants such as Facebook and Google have ignored his demands to screen derogatory material from their sites, so the government would have to act on its own.

The dispute highlights India's continuing difficulty in balancing the Internet culture of freewheeling discourse with its homegrown religious and political sensitivities. Government officials are upset about Web pages that are insulting to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, ruling Congress party leader Sonia Gandhi and major religious figures.

Kapil Sibal, India's telecommunications minister, said he spoke repeatedly with officials from major Internet companies over the past three months and asked them to come up with a voluntary framework to keep offensive material off the Internet.

"This is a matter of great concern to us. We have to take care of the sensibility of our people," he said.

In a meeting Monday, the Internet companies told him there was nothing they could do, he said, so the government would formulate a policy on its own. He declined to specify what that policy would be.

"We are seeking their cooperation, and if somebody is not willing to cooperate on incendiary material like this, it is the duty of government to think of steps that we need to take," he said. "We don't want to interfere in freedom of the press, but this kind of material should not be allowed."

Indian media reports said that during the meeting Monday, Sibal specifically told officials from Google, Facebook, Yahoo and Microsoft about posts that were insulting to Singh, Gandhi and religious leaders.

Facebook said in a statement Tuesday it would remove content that "is hateful, threatening, incites violence or contains nudity."

"We recognize the government's interest in minimizing the amount of abusive content that is available online and will continue to engage with the Indian authorities as they debate this important issue," the company said.

Spokesmen from Google and Microsoft declined to comment on the meeting.

One person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press that the demand was sparked by a Facebook page about Sonia Gandhi. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks.

Facebook has three pages titled "I hate Sonia Gandhi," two titled "We hate Sonia Gandhi," and one titled "Manmohan Singh is a puppet of Sonia Gandhi." India has more than 25 million Facebook users.

Before his news conference Tuesday, Sibal showed reporters Web illustrations showing Singh and Gandhi in compromising positions as well as a site showing pigs running through Islam's holy city of Mecca, a clear insult to Muslims.

"I believe that no reasonable person aware of these sensibilities of large sections of communities in this country and aware of community standards as they are applicable in India would wish to see this content in the public domain," he said.

Sibal said the Internet companies had told him that they were applying U.S. standards to their sites, and he objected, saying that they needed to be sensitive to Indian sensibilities.

Rajesh Chharia, president of the Internet Service Providers Association of India, said Internet companies need to be mindful of concerns over national security and national sensitivities.

"I am not favoring censorship ? self-regulation is the best censorship available to our system," he said. "We should not do anything which should harm the peace of the country."

India has had conflicts with technology companies in the past over information access, and Sibal said Tuesday that many of the companies have been reluctant to hand over data the government has asked for related to terrorists.

Last year, India threatened to ban the popular corporate email and messenger services on Blackberry devices amid security concerns over access to encrypted information. The government later backed down.

The Indian government has made 68 requests to Google this year to remove content, according to Google. The government has also expressed concerns that Google Earth could be used by terrorists to examine targets in preparation for an attack.
